Chapter 11 - The Federal Sweep

The murmur of the crowd instantly died down into a tense, breathless vacuum as the four federal agents marched in tight formation straight down the center aisle of the ballroom. Their dark suits and stoic expressions stood out sharply against the glittering luxury of high society.

Marcus Thorne immediately stepped forward, adjusting his tuxedo jacket with practiced arrogance, attempting to block their path.

"Gentlemen, I believe you are mistaken," Marcus said smoothly, flashing a practiced, authoritative smile. "This is a private, invitation-only charity gala. If you have any business with Vance Enterprises or Thorne Industries, my legal counsel can—"

The lead federal agent did not even break stride. He smoothly sidestepped Marcus as if he were invisible, his eyes locked firmly on the trembling figure standing behind him.

"Julian Vance," the agent announced, his voice echoing cleanly through the ballroom acoustics. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, interstate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit industrial espionage."

The flashing cameras exploded into a blinding frenzy. Photographers surged forward, capturing every agonizing micro-expression of absolute despair on Julian's face as two agents grabbed his arms firmly on either side.

"No! Wait! There's been a mistake! Marcus, help me!" Julian shrieked, panic finally breaking through his paralysis as he thrashed helplessly against the federal agents who expertly slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Marcus Thorne stepped back, putting physical and social distance between himself and Julian as fast as humanly possible, his face hardening into an icy mask of corporate denial. "I have no professional association with this man's criminal activities," Marcus announced loudly to the press corps. "Thorne Industries condemns all forms of fraud."

Chloe turned on her heel, trying to slip quietly backward into the crowd toward the exit doors, her red silk gown swishing rapidly.

"Stop her too," Elena's calm, icy voice rang out across the room, pointing directly at the fleeing socialite.

Two other agents swiftly pivoted, cutting off Chloe’s escape route and blocking her path with absolute authority.

"On what grounds?!" Chloe hissed, her facade of untouchable elegance completely shattering into a frantic, panicked screech. "I haven't done anything! I'm just a private citizen!"

"Actually, Miss Sterling," a second agent said smoothly, holding up an open warrant document, "our financial crimes division has tracked over two million dollars in illicit wire transfers from Thorne shell companies directly funding your personal offshore accounts. You're coming with us for questioning regarding corporate conspiracy."

The ballroom erupted into sheer pandemonium. Reporters shouted overlapping questions, flashbulbs strobed like lightning bolts, and terrified socialites whispered frantically among themselves as they watched the grand architects of the corporate coup get dragged away in handcuffs.

Elena stood perfectly still amidst the swirling chaos, her white silk gown pristine, her expression completely serene. She turned her gaze slowly toward Marcus Thorne, who stood alone near the edge of the stage, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his champagne glass.

Marcus glared at Elena with pure, unadulterated venom, realizing too late that he had walked straight into a trap meticulously laid by the woman he had underestimated.

"You think this is over, Elena?" Marcus hissed quietly as she walked past him toward the exit. "Thorne Industries will crush you by the end of the week."

Elena paused, turning her head slightly to look at him with a chilling, pitying smile.

"You don't even realize you're already bankrupt, Marcus," she whispered softly.

Before Marcus could respond, his personal smartphone began to buzz violently in his breast pocket. With trembling fingers, he pulled it out, stared at the urgent notification flashing across his screen, and turned deathly pale.
