Chapter 3 - The First Casualty

Elena stared at the glowing laptop screen, her eyes narrowing as she examined the time stamps on the newly arrived surveillance photographs. The images clearly showed Margaret's chosen bride, a twenty-four-year-old socialite named Chloe, sliding into a sleek European sports car with Marcus Thorne—the ruthless billionaire who had been trying to swallow Vance Enterprises whole for the past three years. The pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Julian’s sudden coldness and the orchestrated eviction from her own home weren't just a domestic betrayal; they were part of a coordinated corporate coup.
"Playing a dangerous game, aren't we, Chloe?" Elena whispered to herself, downloading the high-resolution files directly to a secure flash drive.
She picked up her phone and dialed a trusted private investigator who owed her a debt from her corporate law days.
"Viktor, I need a complete financial audit of Chloe Sterling," Elena ordered the moment the line connected. "Every boutique purchase, every offshore wire transfer, and specifically her recent communications with Marcus Thorne. Send it to my terminal within two hours."
"You got it, boss. I thought you were taking a sabbatical," Viktor replied, his voice laced with sudden intrigue.
"The sabbatical is over," Elena said coldly, disconnecting the call without waiting for pleasantries.
Morning light began to bleed over the Manhattan skyline, painting the concrete jungle in harsh shades of gray and silver. Elena had not slept a wink. Instead, she had spent the remaining hours of the night reviewing corporate bylaws, shareholder registries, and the intricate web of shell companies Julian had set up to hide his illicit kickbacks. By 6:00 AM, her legal team had already filed emergency injunctions freezing all operational capital across three major development projects.
Her phone buzzed violently. This time, it was an incoming video call from Julian. She pressed accept, her expression remaining an absolute mask of serene indifference as his panicked face filled the high-definition display.
"Elena! What the hell is going on?!" Julian screamed, his hair disheveled, standing in the opulent foyer of the grand house where she had been cast out just hours before. "All our corporate accounts are locked! The payroll bounced! The board is calling an emergency session!"
"Good morning, Julian," Elena replied smoothly, her voice a soothing contrast to his absolute hysteria. "Did you sleep well?"
"Are you insane? You locked the accounts! The federal compliance officers are already at my office!" Julian ranted, his chest heaving as he stared through the camera lens at her calm demeanor. "Margaret is having a panic attack! Reverse it right now or I swear to God I'll—"
"You'll what?" Elena interrupted softly, leaning closer to the camera. "Call the police to report that your wife reclaimed her own money? Check the fine print on the corporate charter, Julian. Every single asset is tied to my maiden name."
Julian froze, his mouth hanging open as the horrifying reality finally began to sink into his alcohol-addled brain.

"And by the way," Elena added, flashing a chilling smile, "ask Chloe how her friend Marcus Thorne is enjoying his new corporate espionage strategy."
