Chapter 10 - The Red Carpet Execution

Elena did not flinch. She did not quicken her pace. She walked down the center aisle of the ballroom with measured, deliberate steps, the train of her white silk gown gliding smoothly over the polished marble floor. The whispers of the high society crowd swelled around her like a rising tide, but she remained completely insulated in her own aura of absolute power.
Marcus Thorne stepped directly into her path, blocking her way with an arrogant, condescending grin plastered across his face.
"Brave of you to show your face here tonight, Elena," Marcus purred loudly, projecting his voice so the surrounding journalists could catch every word. "I suppose it's hard to accept when you've been completely sidelined by the real players. If you're looking for charity work, I might have an opening for a receptionist at one of my subsidiary firms."
The surrounding crowd held their collective breath, waiting for Elena to break down, scream, or storm out in humiliation.
Instead, Elena stopped just inches from him. She tilted her head slightly, looking down her nose at Marcus as if he were nothing more than an annoying insect crawling across her shoe.
"Save the corporate audition for someone gullible enough to believe your fabricated press releases, Marcus," Elena replied, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom without a single trace of tremor.
Marcus's arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "You're in severe denial, Elena. Your company is frozen, your assets are locked, and your ex-husband signed over the controlling shares to secure his future with a real woman."
Elena slowly turned her gaze past Marcus’s shoulder, locking her cold, piercing eyes onto Julian, who looked as though he was about to faint right there on the carpet.
"Is that right, Julian?" Elena asked softly, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "Did you secure your future?"
Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His lips trembled violently as he shrank back into the shadow of his new fiancée.
"Tell them, Julian," Elena urged, stepping closer, her voice dripping with lethal elegance. "Tell everyone here how you traded your architectural legacy for a corporate spy funded by Marcus Thorne. Tell them how you tried to flee the country with stolen capital while your mother helped you orchestrate the betrayal."
The ballroom erupted into instant chaos. Shouts, gasps, and frantic questions exploded from the press corps as microphones thrust forward toward Julian and Marcus.
"She's lying! It's all a desperate fabrication!" Marcus shouted over the uproar, his face turning an angry shade of crimson as he grabbed Julian by the shoulder. "Tell them it's a lie, Julian!"
Julian looked at Marcus, then looked at Elena, and finally looked out at the sea of camera lenses flashing blindingly in his face. The pressure cracked his fragile psyche completely.
"I... I didn't mean to..." Julian stammered, his voice cracking loudly over a live microphone held by a nearby reporter.
Chloe gasped in pure horror, letting go of Julian's arm as if he were carrying a deadly plague. "You idiot!" she hissed under her breath.

Before Marcus could pull Julian away, the heavy security doors at the grand entrance swung open once more, and four federal agents in dark suits strode purposefully into the ballroom.
