Chapter 7 - The Queen's Gambit

"Sit down, Julian," Elena commanded, her voice ringing through the suffocatingly silent boardroom with the authority of an absolute monarch.
Julian stood frozen at the head of the table, his chest heaving as the remaining six board members stared at him in utter disgust. The corporate lawyer sitting to Julian's left nervously adjusted his tie, clearing his throat before sliding a stack of documents toward Elena.
"Mrs. Vance... or should I say, Madam Chair," the lawyer began, his voice trembling slightly under her piercing gaze. "We have audited the preliminary financials. Mr. Vance has unauthorizedly encumbered eighty percent of our primary architecture patents through shell corporations linked to... external entities."
"I am well aware of my ex-husband's extracurricular activities," Elena interrupted smoothly, opening her leather portfolio. She slid a certified legal document across the mahogany wood directly into the lawyer's hands. "And as the sole holder of the foundational intellectual property trust, I am exercising clause twelve of the corporate charter. I am revoking Julian Vance's executive status effective immediately."
"You can't do that!" Julian finally exploded, slamming his palms onto the table and leaning over it toward her. "The board hasn't even voted! You're treating this company like your personal piggy bank just because you're bitter about a divorce!"
"A divorce that you orchestrated alongside your mother and your little corporate spy," Elena fired back calmly, looking up at him with eyes as cold as arctic ice. "Shall I project the wire transfers from Marcus Thorne onto the boardroom screen for everyone here to admire?"
The room went dead silent. The board members exchanged horrified glances. One elderly board member, who had known Elena's father for decades, slowly shook his head and closed his folder.
"Get out of my seat, Julian," Elena whispered, her tone dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register that demanded absolute obedience.
Defeated, broken, and utterly exposed, Julian slowly retreated from the head of the table, his legs trembling as he collapsed into an empty chair near the door. The lawyer quickly flipped through Elena's legal document, stamped it with the corporate seal, and slid it across the table toward her.
"The paperwork is fully executed," the lawyer announced formally. "Elena Vance is reinstated as majority controlling shareholder and interim CEO of Vance Enterprises."
A collective sigh of relief echoed through the room from the terrified executives who suddenly realized their jobs were safe under her leadership. But Elena wasn't finished. She stood up slowly, smoothing the fabric of her white gown, and picked up her portfolio.
"The emergency board meeting is adjourned," Elena announced, walking toward the private exit. "Julian, clean out your desk by sunset. Security will be monitoring your exit."
As she walked out into the private corridor, her phone buzzed with an urgent text message from Viktor that made her stop dead in her tracks.
