Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Julian’s face drained of every last trace of color, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic at the mention of Marcus Thorne's name. The panic in his voice vanished, replaced by a sudden, desperate stutter that betrayed his absolute guilt.

"Wh-What are you talking about?" Julian stammered, his fingers gripping the edge of his mahogany foyer table so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. "Marcus Thorne? I don't know any Marcus Thorne!"

"Save the amateur acting for your mistress, Julian," Elena replied, her tone dropping an octave into a freezing register. "You thought you could trade me out like an old piece of furniture while quietly selling our core architecture patents to my fiercest competitor behind my back? Did you really think I wouldn't notice the discrepancy in the Q3 R&D expenditures?"

"Elena, listen to me, you're misunderstanding everything!" Julian pleaded, his arrogant facade completely shattered in a matter of seconds. "Chloe... Chloe just met him for a casual coffee! It's nothing! Please, you have to lift the freeze on the accounts. The board is going to vote to oust me by noon if we don't fix this!"

"Let them vote," Elena said flatly. "In fact, I'm faxing my proxy resignation as a silent partner directly to the board chairman right now. Which means the remaining shares revert entirely to my direct, unmitigated control."

Before Julian could scream another plea, Elena tapped the screen and terminated the video call, severing the digital lifeline he desperately needed. She tossed the phone onto the marble table with a soft click, feeling a deep, cathartic rush of power wash over her. For fifteen years, she had allowed herself to play the supportive, invisible wife behind a narcissistic architect who took all the credit for her brilliance. That woman died on the steps of that grand house last night.

She stood up and walked over to her espresso machine, brewing a dark, bitter shot of coffee. As she sipped it slowly, the intercom at the penthouse entrance chimed softly. Viktor stood in the security camera feed holding a thick manila folder, his expression grave. She buzzed him up immediately.

Minutes later, Viktor walked into the expansive living room, tossing the manila folder onto the coffee table with a heavy thud.

"You were right about the girl, Elena," Viktor said, sinking into a velvet armchair. "Chloe Sterling isn't just a socialite. She’s a professional operative trained in corporate infiltration. Her entire backstory, her university degrees, her family wealth—it's all a meticulously crafted fabrication paid for by Marcus Thorne."

Elena opened the folder, her eyes scanning the financial wire receipts confirming massive payouts from Thorne Industries directly into Chloe's offshore accounts.

"So Julian didn't just cheat on me," Elena murmured coldly. "He walked straight into a honey trap set by my oldest corporate enemy, and handed them the keys to our entire portfolio."

"Worse than that," Viktor warned, sliding a final photograph across the table. "Look at who signed Chloe's apartment lease three months ago."

Elena looked down at the signature on the lease document, and her blood ran ice cold as she recognized the handwriting.
