Chapter 9 - The Second Beneficiary

The chyron on the television screen flashed in bold red letters: Vance Holdings Forensic Audit Uncovers Missing Subsidiary Linked to Offshore Shell Company.
Eleanor froze, her thumb hovering over the screen of her tablet. She leaned closer, straining her eyes to read the rapid-fire text scrolling beneath the anchor's frantic voice. The federal auditors hadn't just frozen Julian’s corporate accounts; they had discovered an entirely separate, dormant subsidiary registered in Zurich under a name Eleanor hadn't heard in over twenty years—*Vance-Miller Trust, Established 1994*.
"What is this?" Eleanor whispered to the empty room, her breath fogging slightly in the unheated penthouse.
Her phone buzzed violently on the coffee table. It wasn't Julian from a holding cell. It was an encrypted text message containing a single digital document attachment: a certified copy of the original 1994 trust deed, signed not by Julian, nor by his late father, but by Eleanor herself—alongside a signature belonging to Amy’s late mother.
Before Eleanor could fully process the implication, her front door chimed. Not the elevator bell, but the private service entrance at the back of the foyer. Her heart skipped a beat. No one knew she was still here; the federal marshals weren't scheduled to clear the property until tomorrow morning.
Slowly, clutching her sequined dress around her shivering frame, Eleanor walked down the dimly lit hallway toward the service foyer. The heavy iron door stood slightly ajar, a cool draft seeping through the gap. Pushed against the base of the door was a single, heavy manila envelope stamped with a red wax seal bearing the Vance family crest—a crest that had supposedly been legally dissolved that very morning.
Eleanor reached down with trembling fingers, picked up the envelope, and pulled back the flap. Inside wasn't legal paperwork or corporate notices. It was a vintage silver pocket watch—the exact one Eleanor’s husband had given to Amy’s father thirty years ago, before a tragic, forgotten scandal tore their business partnership apart.
A soft knock echoed from the hallway outside the service door. Eleanor stepped back, her breath hitching in her throat as she called out into the shadows.
"Who's there?" she demanded, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound commanding.

A low, calm voice answered from the dark stairwell—a voice she hadn't heard in three decades, belonging to a man the entire city believed had died in a plane crash over the Alps in 1995.
