Chapter 4 - The Empty Nest

The silence inside the sprawling Vance family estate was deafening. Gone were the whispered conversations of society elites, the clinking of crystal, and the hollow laughter of sycophants. Now, the sprawling mansion felt less like a monument to success and more like a mausoleum.

Julian sat slumped in a leather armchair in his father's old study, his tuxedo jacket discarded on the floor, his shirt collar unbuttoned. The federal investigation was moving at a terrifying speed, freezing not just corporate accounts, but personal assets, vehicles, and credit cards. For the first time in his pampered thirty-two years of life, Julian Vance was financially paralyzed.

The heavy oak door creaked open, and Eleanor walked in, holding a single sheet of paper. Her face was pale, lined with the crushing weight of reality.

"They've seized the Hamptons estate," Eleanor said quietly, dropping the document onto the mahogany desk. "And the yacht. Everything is under receivership until the audit is complete. We have forty-eight hours to vacate this property."

Julian didn't look up from his drink—a cheap glass of bourbon he had scavenged from the staff quarters. "Let them take it. It doesn't matter anymore."

"Don't be a fool," Eleanor snapped, her patience finally snapping under the strain. "We need to mount a defense. We need to find Amy. She is the only one who can sign the affidavits to unfreeze the primary accounts. She holds the cryptographic keys to the offshore trusts."

"Find her?" Julian laughed bitterly, running a hand through his unstyled dark hair. "Mother, she boarded a private medical transport flight bound for Zurich six hours ago. Her passport was updated under her maiden name a month ago. She planned this down to the exact second. She was never just a helpless pregnant woman; she was a predator waiting for the right moment to strike."

Eleanor walked over to the window, staring out into the misty dawn. "Because you drove her to it, Julian. You brought Chloe into our lives, you flaunted your indiscretions, and you assumed her loyalty could be bought with a ring and an empty promise. You underestimated a brilliant woman."

"She's carrying my child," Julian muttered, a sudden spike of primal panic cutting through his alcoholic haze. "She can't just take my son—or daughter—across the globe and keep them from me."

"Oh, she can," Eleanor replied coldly. "And legally, she has every right. Under international law, a mother fleeing documented financial volatility and psychological distress has full protective custody rights until proven otherwise. And right now, you are facing federal fraud charges."

Julian buried his face in his hands, finally feeling the crushing weight of his arrogance. But as he sat there in the dim morning light, his phone buzzed on the desk. It wasn't a federal alert or a bill collector. It was an unknown international number. With trembling fingers, he tapped the screen and pressed it to his ear.

"Hello?" he rasped.

A soft, synthesized female voice played through the speaker, reciting a set of GPS coordinates followed by a single, chilling sentence.
