Chapter 8 - The Closing Net

The flashing red and blue lights of the federal SUVs painted the fuselage of the Gulfstream in harsh, alternating strokes. Heavy doors slammed shut in unison, and half a dozen armed agents fanned out across the tarmac, their weapons holstered but their postures entirely uncompromising. Special Agent Miller stepped forward from the lead vehicle, holding an official detention warrant.
Julian spun around, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He looked at Chloe, then back at the laptop screen where Amy’s face remained impassive and calm.
"You called them," Julian whispered, the betrayal tasting like copper on his tongue. "You lured me out here just to hand me over."
"I didn't lure you anywhere, Julian," Amy’s voice came clearly through the cabin speakers. "I simply gave you an open door and watched to see which direction your character would take. You chose to run, to abandon your mother, to try and slip past the border using illicit papers provided by a corporate investigator. You wrote your own indictment."
Special Agent Miller stopped a few feet away, his expression grim as he glanced up at Chloe, who gave the agent a sharp, professional nod of acknowledgment.
"Julian Vance," Agent Miller announced, his voice carrying clearly over the whine of the jet turbines. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, securities tampering, and unauthorized international document procurement. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Julian didn't move. He stood frozen on the cracked asphalt, the cold wind whipping his hair, his mind racing through a hundred different angles of escape that no longer existed. He looked up at the laptop screen one last time, desperate for a crack in her armor, a sign of hesitation, anything that proved she still cared.
"Is the baby safe?" Julian asked, his voice suddenly sounding small, stripped of all its arrogance and entitlement.
Amy stared at him through the camera lens, her expression softening just enough to reveal the deep emotional toll this entire ordeal had taken on her. She lowered her hand from her stomach and took a slow, measured breath.
"My child is safe, Julian," Amy said softly. "Far away from here. Far away from your influence, your debts, and your legacy."
"Amy—"
"It's over, Julian," she interrupted, her voice firm and absolute.
Before he could utter another syllable, Agent Miller stepped forward, grabbing Julian firmly by the shoulders and spinning him around. The cold steel of handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists, biting sharply into his skin. As they pushed him down the tarmac toward the waiting SUV, Julian caught one final glimpse of Chloe stepping into the Gulfstream cabin before the heavy door swung shut and sealed itself.

Inside the sprawling Manhattan penthouse miles away, Eleanor sat alone in the dark, watching the live news broadcast on her tablet as her son was perp-walked across the tarmac in handcuffs. But as the camera panned away from the airfield, a breaking news banner flashed across the bottom of the screen, revealing a secret Amy hadn't shared with anyone—not even Chloe.
