Chapter 2 - The Microscopic Truth

Eleanor’s hand shook violently as she pinched the tiny black micro-SD card between her thumb and forefinger. The elevator doors had already closed, sealing away the echo of Amy’s steady heels against the marble floor. Across the room, the music swelled, drowning out the domestic earthquake that had just occurred in the darkest corner of the penthouse. Julian pulled back from Chloe, laughing lazily as he planted a kiss on her bare shoulder, completely oblivious to the fact that his entire life had just unraveled.

"Mother, you look like you've seen a ghost," Julian’s voice cut through the ambient noise as he sauntered over, a glass of amber scotch balanced effortlessly in his hand. His tuxedo bowtie was slightly askew, a symptom of too much champagne and too little restraint. "Where did Amy run off to? People are starting to ask questions about the bride-to-be disappearing before the midnight toast."

Eleanor closed her fist, trapping the memory card safely in her palm. Her maternal instinct warred furiously with her innate sense of self-preservation. She looked at her son—thirty-two years old, brilliantly wealthy, and profoundly stupid.

"Amy isn't feeling well," Eleanor said, her voice remarkably steady despite the violent pounding of her heart. She slipped the card into the deep pocket of her sequined dress. "She went home early. And frankly, Julian, given your behavior tonight, I am profoundly disgusted."

Julian scoffed, rolling his eyes as he took a sip of his drink. "Oh, stop being dramatic, Mother. Amy knew what she signed up for when she entered our world. It's a strategic alliance, not a romance novel. She gets the name, the prestige, and the lifestyle. A little wandering on my part is just the cost of doing business."

Eleanor stared at her son, realizing for the first time just how monstrously arrogant he had become under her indulgent supervision. "You think she's playing your game, Julian? You think she cares about your name or your money?"

"Of course she does," Julian laughed dismissively, scanning the room for Chloe. "Where else would she go? She has no independent fortune of her own. Her family name carries prestige, but the accounts are dry. She needs me."

"She just handed me her engagement ring," Eleanor whispered, her voice dropping to a dangerous register that finally commanded a fraction of his attention. "And she told me to tell you that she chose peace. And then she walked out into the cold night air, seven months pregnant with your child, completely alone."

Julian froze, the glass halfway to his mouth. The amusement drained entirely from his face, replaced by a sudden, frantic confusion. "What are you talking about? She's bluffing. She always threatens to leave when she gets emotional."

"She didn't cry, Julian," Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, cold fury. "There were no tears. No screaming. Just a deadness in her eyes that told me she is never coming back."

Panic finally flickered in Julian’s chest, but before he could demand answers or chase after her, his phone buzzed loudly in his tuxedo pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a message from Amy. Instead, the screen displayed a breaking financial alert that made his blood run instantly cold.
