Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The hum of the high-rise penthouse party felt distant, muffled by the sheer gravity of what Amy had just set into motion. Eleanor stared down at the cold, multi-carat diamond resting in her palm as if it were a venomous insect. Across the mahogany cocktail table, Amy stood tall in her pale mauve cape dress, her hand resting naturally against the gentle curve of her seven-month pregnancy.
"She has no idea, does she?" Amy asked quietly, her voice devoid of malice, carrying only a terrifying, hollow certainty.
Eleanor’s fingers trembled, the dark green sequins of her dress catching the fractured city lights bleeding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. In the soft-focus background, Julian—Eleanor’s son and Amy’s fiancé of three years—was completely lost in a slow, intoxicating embrace with Chloe, a woman draped in liquid gold whose laughter drifted over the jazz notes like sharp glass.
"Amy, please don't do this," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking as she pressed a trembling hand to her mouth. "Julian is foolish, he’s arrogant, but he’s your future husband. You can't just walk away from an empire like this over a momentary lapse in judgment."
"A momentary lapse?" Amy’s gaze flicked briefly toward the couple in the background before locking back onto Eleanor with an unyielding, chilling calm. "He has been absent for four months, Eleanor. While I sat in sterile doctor offices listening to a heartbeat he couldn't be bothered to share, he was funding her wardrobe and her silence."
"We can fix this quietly," Eleanor pleaded, leaning forward, desperate to salvage the high-society merger that their families had spent two decades engineering. "Name your terms. A trust fund, real estate, whatever you need to secure your position."
Amy offered a sad, thin smile that didn't reach her eyes. She reached down, her manicured fingers brushing the smooth leather of her gold clutch bag as she prepared for the final cut.
"Tell him I finally chose peace," Amy said softly, the words hanging heavy in the pressurized air of the penthouse suite. "And tell him something else before I walk out those double doors for the very last time."
Eleanor braced herself, her breath catching in her throat.
"He's losing the child he doesn't even know exists," Amy whispered.

Before Eleanor could scream or beg, Amy turned her back, walking toward the private elevator. As the brass doors slid open to swallow her, Eleanor looked down at the ring, only to notice a tiny micro-sd card neatly tucked underneath the velvet lining.
