Chapter 9: The Raid

The heavy oak front door shuddered under the force of a heavy strike, and before anyone could move toward the lock, two uniformed police officers flanked by a detective in a sharp grey suit pushed their way past the deadbolt. The door slammed against the interior wall with a loud bang, rattling the crystal chandelier above. The flashing red and blue lights from the cruisers outside painted the luxurious dining room in harsh, strobe-like hues.
"Stay right where you are! Nobody move!" the lead detective commanded, his hand resting instinctively on the holster of his sidearm as his eyes swept the room.
Julian’s knees buckled slightly, and he caught the edge of the long banquet table to keep from collapsing. Victoria raised her hands instinctively, clutching her briefcase tightly to her chest. Marcus remained entirely still, his hands tucked loosely into his overcoat pockets, watching the chaos unfold with the detached air of an observer at a play.
Detective Vance—no relation to Marcus, despite the shared name—stepped into the center of the room, his gaze locking immediately onto the manila envelope, the leather ledger, and the flash drive resting on the golden plate.
"Julian Sinclair?" the detective asked, pulling a small notebook from his pocket.
Julian swallowed hard, unable to find his voice, and gave a slow, imperceptible nod.
"Julian Sinclair, you are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and grand larceny," the detective stated clearly, stepping forward to pull a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Elena stood a few feet away, still holding Lily tightly against her shoulder, shielding the little girl's eyes from the flashing lights and the approaching officers. Beatrice stood beside her, trembling violently as she clutched Elena's arm for support.
"Mommy, what's happening?" Lily whispered into Elena’s neck, her small frame shaking.
"Hush, baby, the men are just talking to Daddy," Elena lied softly, blinking back her own fresh tears.
The detective signaled to one of the uniformed officers, who stepped forward and grabbed Julian’s wrists, wrenching his arms behind his back. The sharp click of the handcuffs locking into place echoed loudly through the silent dining room. Julian didn't fight back; he offered no resistance, his eyes locked desperately on Elena’s face as he was hauled toward the entryway.
"Elena... please," Julian pleaded hoarsely as the officer guided him past the ruined banquet table. "Tell them it's a misunderstanding. Please, for Lily's sake."
Elena didn't look at him. She turned her head away, her expression carved from stone.
As Julian was led out the front door and toward the flashing cruisers, Detective Vance lingered behind for a moment. He looked at Marcus, then at Victoria, before turning his attention to Elena.
"Mrs. Sinclair, I'm going to need you to come down to the precinct tomorrow morning to sign some preliminary statements regarding the household assets," the detective said professionally, handing her a card.
"I'll be there," Elena replied quietly.

The detective nodded and walked out, leaving the front door wide open to the cold night air. Marcus picked up his leather gloves from the table, tipped an imaginary hat toward Elena, and walked out without a word. Victoria scurried out right behind him, desperate to distance herself from the wreckage.
Elena stood alone in the ruins of her life, holding her daughter, unaware that the real nightmare had only just begun.
