Chapter 5: Shadows at the Window

Before Elena could respond to Julian’s ominous warning, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front porch. Tap, tap, tap. Three deliberate knocks on the heavy oak door shattered the tense silence of the room. Lily screamed softly and buried her face deeper into Elena’s cardigan. Beatrice gasped, her hands trembling as she clutched the arms of her chair. Julian froze, all the color draining entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in his rumpled white shirt.

"Who is that?" Victoria demanded, her professional composure finally fracturing completely as she gripped her briefcase like a shield. "Did you tell someone you were coming here, Julian?"

Julian didn't answer. He backed away slowly from the door, his eyes wide with a primal, animalistic fear that Elena had never seen in him during their twelve years of marriage.

"Julian," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to remain strong. "Who is at the door?"

"We have to hide," Julian whispered urgently, ignoring her question as he scanned the room for an exit. "If that's Marcus, we won't live to see the morning."

"Marcus?" Victoria hissed, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Marcus Vance? You borrowed from the syndicate through Marcus?"

"I had no choice!" Julian shouted, losing his restraint entirely as another heavy knock rattled the door frame, this time accompanied by the heavy scrape of a boot on the porch tile.

Elena pushed Lily gently toward her grandmother. "Grandma Beatrice, take Lily into the pantry and lock the door behind you. Do not come out for any reason, do you understand?"

Beatrice nodded mutely, her eyes swimming with tears as she scooped the sobbing little girl into her arms and hurried toward the kitchen corridor, the heavy door clicking shut behind them. Elena turned back to face the two adults who had brought a nightmare straight to her dining room table. She walked over to the buffet, reached into a velvet-lined drawer, and pulled out a heavy, silver-plated candlestick holder, gripping it like a club.

"Elena, put that down, you're going to get us all killed," Victoria whispered frantically, pressing herself flat against the mahogany wall.

May you like

"In my house?" Elena challenged, her voice dripping with lethal fury. "Nobody kills anyone in my house without going through me first."

A heavy thud shook the front door, followed by the terrifying sound of a key sliding into the exterior lock and turning smoothly. Julian had given them spare keys. The realization hit Elena like a physical blow as the heavy oak door slowly began to swing open, revealing the silhouette of a tall, broad-shouldered man standing in the dim light of the porch.
