Chapter 14: The Digital Confession

The wail of police sirens returned to the estate less than ten minutes later, sharper and more urgent than before. Detective Vance strode up the grand staircase accompanied by a forensic technician carrying a heavy metal case. The officers bypassed the ruined dining room entirely, heading straight up to Lily’s bedroom where Elena, Beatrice, and Lily were waiting. Richard and Marcus stood near the doorway, watching the proceedings with intense concentration.

"Where is it, Mrs. Sinclair?" Detective Vance asked, stepping into the dust-strewn room.

Elena pointed silently to the heavy metal lockbox resting on the carpet beside the open floorboards. The technician immediately knelt down, pulling a specialized digital scanning pad and a set of extraction tools from his case.

"We can't use biometric sensors without the suspect present," the technician muttered, attaching a series of micro-cables to the side port of the lockbox. "I'll have to bypass the internal hard-drive encryption manually. Give me five minutes."

The minutes ticked by in absolute silence. Lily had fallen asleep in Beatrice's arms, exhausted from the morning's trauma. Elena stood by the window, watching the police cruisers parked outside, her mind racing through a thousand different scenarios. What could Julian have possibly hidden that warranted an entire floorboard cutout? Was it more stolen money? Fake passports? Or something much darker?

"Got it," the technician said suddenly, a soft green light blinking on his handheld monitor.

With a mechanical click, the heavy lid of the lockbox popped open.

Detective Vance stepped forward, kneeling down to lift the lid the rest of the way. Inside, there were no bearer bonds, no stacks of cash, and no fake passports. Instead, resting neatly on a velvet lining, sat a single, high-capacity digital voice recorder and a stack of handwritten journals with dates spanning the last five years.

The detective reached in carefully, picking up the voice recorder. He pressed the playback button, adjusting the volume so everyone in the room could hear clearly.

Julian’s voice filled the quiet bedroom, sounding eerily calm, crisp, and detached.

"If you're listening to this, it means the house of cards finally collapsed. I didn't want it to end this way, but the addiction, the debts—they consume everything they touch. I started the embezzlement three years ago to pay off Marcus's associates, but the real truth... the real reason I had to keep going... is that the first theft twelve years ago wasn't just mine. Uncle Richard knew about it. In fact, he helped me frame my business partner so we could split the initial five million. If I'm going down, Uncle Richard goes down with me."

The recording clicked off, leaving a suffocating, dead silence in the room.

Richard staggered backward, his face turning the color of ash, every bit of color draining from his cheeks as he stared at the voice recorder in absolute horror.

Elena slowly turned her head to look at Richard, a cold, terrifying realization dawning in her eyes. "Uncle Richard... is that true?"

Before Richard could stammer out a denial, Detective Vance snapped a pair of steel handcuffs onto Richard’s wrists with lightning speed.
