Chapter 3: The Uninvited Arrival

The heavy oak front door creaked open before anyone could answer it, and a pair of polished leather shoes stepped onto the imported marble flooring of the foyer. A tall woman in a sharp charcoal trench coat entered the dining room, holding a sleek leather briefcase. She stopped abruptly upon seeing the tableau of absolute misery: the crying child, the shocked grandmother, the furious wife, and the cornered husband. The stranger’s eyes locked onto Julian with a cold, professional indifference that immediately sent a chill down his spine.
"Julian," the woman said smoothly, her voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room like a scalpel. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but we have a major problem with the corporate merger in Chicago."
Elena turned her head slowly, her eyes narrowing as she studied the newcomer from head to toe. The expensive cut of the trench coat, the designer handbag, the sharp, confident posture—this was not a random business associate. This was the embodiment of Julian’s betrayal standing right in their dining room.
"And who might you be?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper that commanded absolute silence in the room.
The woman blinked, finally noticing the tear tracks on Elena’s face and the manila envelope resting on the golden plate. A flicker of realization crossed her features, quickly replaced by a guarded expression.
"I'm Victoria Vance," the woman replied, extending a hand that no one took. "I'm Julian's senior partner at the firm."
"Partner," Elena repeated the word as if it tasted foul. She took two deliberate steps toward Victoria, the grief in her posture entirely replaced by a lethal composure. "Is that what they're calling mistresses these days? Senior partners?"
Julian lunged forward, placing himself physically between his wife and Victoria, his face flushed with panic.
"Victoria, you shouldn't have come here," Julian hissed, his voice trembling. "Get out. Now."
"I had to come, Julian," Victoria retorted, her professional composure finally cracking as irritation bled into her tone. "Your accounts are frozen. The board discovered the discrepancy this morning. If we don't transfer the remaining funds immediately, the federal authorities will be notified by morning."
Elena stopped in her tracks, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of her mouth. She looked past Julian directly at Victoria.
"Federal authorities?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously calm. "Do tell. What kind of federal authorities investigate a simple corporate merger?"

Victoria looked at Julian, waiting for him to take control, but Julian was paralyzed, staring at the floor with defeat written in every line of his body.
"Not a merger," Victoria said quietly, deciding to save her own skin. "Wire fraud and embezzlement."
