Chapter 13: The Upstairs Discovery

The scream echoed down the grand staircase—high-pitched, panicked, and undeniably belonging to six-year-old Lily. Elena didn't hesitate. She bolted past Marcus and his men, sprinting up the curved wooden staircase two steps at a time, her heart pounding against her ribs with terrifying velocity. Beatrice followed closely behind, gasping for breath as she called out her granddaughter's name. Richard and Marcus exchanged a sharp glance before following them up to the second floor.
Elena reached the top of the landing and pushed open the door to Lily’s bedroom. The room, usually a sanctuary of pastel pinks, stuffed animals, and fairy lights, was in complete disarray. The mattress had been pulled away from the wall, and the floorboards near the closet had been pried up, exposing a dark, hollow cavity beneath the subfloor.
Lily was sitting on the edge of the displaced mattress, sobbing uncontrollably, pointing a trembling finger toward the dark opening in the floor.
"Mommy! There's a box down there! A scary box!" Lily cried, burying her face in her hands.
Elena rushed across the room, kneeling beside her daughter and pulling her into a tight, protective embrace. "Shh, baby, it's okay. Mommy's here. You're safe."
Beatrice hurried into the room, dropping to her knees to comfort the terrified little child. Elena stood up slowly, stepping over to the open cavity in the floorboards. Inside the dark, dusty recess sat a heavy, fireproof metal lockbox, its exterior covered in thick layer of dust. It was an object Julian had clearly hidden away and forgotten in his frantic rush, or perhaps intended to retrieve when the walls finally caved in.
Richard walked into the room, followed cautiously by Marcus. Richard knelt down beside the opening, reached into the cavity, and lifted the heavy metal box out, placing it carefully on the carpeted floor.
"What is that?" Marcus asked, his professional curiosity piqued as he stepped closer.
"Julian's true insurance policy," Richard muttered grimly, examining the digital keypad on the front of the box.
"Can you open it?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously calm as she stared down at the metal container that held whatever final secret her husband had kept from her.
Richard shook his head. "It's a biometric lock tied to Julian's thumbprint. Without him, we'd need a professional locksmith or a plasma torch to break it open."
"We don't need a locksmith," Elena said coldly. She walked over to her dressing table, picked up her smartphone, and dialed a number she had sworn she would never call again. After three agonizing rings, a raspy, official-sounding voice answered on the other end.
"Detective Vance speaking."
"Detective, this is Elena Sinclair," Elena said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "If you want the complete accounting of every fraudulent asset my husband hid from the federal government, you need to come back to the house right now. We found his private lockbox."

On the other end of the line, there was a brief pause before the detective replied sharply, "Don't touch anything, Mrs. Sinclair. I'm dispatching a unit right now."
Elena hung up the phone, turned around, and locked eyes with Marcus and Richard, knowing that whatever was inside that box would either save them or bury them all forever.
