Chapter 4: The House of Cards

The word embezzlement hung in the luxurious dining room like a foul-smelling smoke, suffocating the remaining air out of the space. Beatrice slumped heavily back into her chair, clutching her chest as if she had been physically struck. Lily whimpered again, sensing the terror radiating from the adults, and ducked back behind Elena’s legs. Julian squeezed his eyes shut, wishing the marble floor would simply open up and swallow him whole. The illusion he had spent a decade crafting—the successful executive, the devoted family man, the pillar of the community—was dissolving into dust right before his eyes.
"Embezzlement," Elena whispered the word testingly, as if trying to comprehend the sheer scale of the catastrophe. She turned her gaze back to her husband, her eyes devoid of tears now, replaced by a hollow, terrifying numbness. "Whose money, Julian? Whose accounts did you raid?"
Julian opened his eyes, staring desperately at his wife. "The company's... and a few private trust funds."
"Which trust funds?" Elena demanded, stepping closer until she was inches away from him. "Tell me the truth, Julian. Right now."
"Ours," Julian whispered, the confession barely audible above the hum of the chandelier. "And... and your father's estate."
Elena staggered backward as if she had been struck across the face. Her father’s estate—the legacy her late father had left behind to secure Lily’s future education and well-being. Julian hadn't just stolen from their joint savings; he had pilfered the sacred inheritance of a dead man and a helpless child.
"You bastard," Elena choked out, the anger returning with such ferocity that her entire body trembled. "That was for Lily. Everything my father worked for... you stole it?"
Victoria adjusted the strap of her briefcase, looking increasingly uncomfortable as the family drama unfolded around her.
"Look, this is a private family matter," Victoria said, backing toward the foyer. "Julian, sort your personal life out. But if the audit hits my desk tomorrow morning, I'm turning over all the secondary hard drives to the SEC."
"You aren't going anywhere, Victoria," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave as she turned sharply toward the door.
Elena darted past Julian and slammed the heavy front door shut, sliding the deadbolt home with a resounding clack. She turned around, key in hand, tucking it firmly into the pocket of her brown pants.
"Nobody leaves this house until we have a complete accounting of every single penny," Elena declared, locking eyes with both of them. "You think you can ruin my family and walk out of here to catch a flight? Think again."

Julian watched in horror as his carefully orchestrated escape route was summarily blocked by his wife's sudden, unbreakable resolve.
"Elena, open the door," Julian pleaded, stepping toward her. "You don't understand the danger we're in. The people I borrowed from—they aren't just bankers."
