Chapter 10: The Empty Mansion

The morning sun filtered weakly through the tall dining room windows, casting long, pale shadows across the empty banquet table. The golden plates had been cleared away, the decaying floral centerpiece thrown into the trash, and the shattered crystal wine glass swept from the marble floor. The house was deafeningly quiet. Without Julian, the sprawling luxury estate felt less like a home and more like a mausoleum.
Elena sat at the kitchen island, staring blankly into a mug of cold black coffee. The manila envelope, the leather ledger, and the flash drive sat neatly piled in the center of the counter—her new reality waiting to be unpacked. Beatrice walked into the kitchen, pouring herself a cup of water with shaking hands before taking a seat across from Elena.
"The bank called about the mortgage twenty minutes ago," Beatrice said softly, her voice heavy with fatigue. "They said the grace period ends today. If we can't secure a refinancing package, they're foreclosing by the end of the month."
Elena didn't look up from her coffee mug. "Let them foreclose, Grandma. There's nothing in this house worth saving anymore."
"And Lily?" Beatrice asked, her eyes welling with tears. "Where are we supposed to go, Elena? We have no savings, no credit, and Julian drained every account bearing our names."
"We go back to where we started," Elena replied, her voice firm, though a deep, aching void echoed underneath her words. "Before the expensive cars, before the country club memberships, before Julian built an empire out of stolen money."
Before Beatrice could answer, a sharp rap sounded at the front door, echoing through the empty halls. Elena frowned, glancing at the wall clock. It was barely eight in the morning. She stood up from the counter, smoothing down her cream silk blouse—the same one she had worn the night before—and walked down the long hallway toward the grand entryway.
She pulled the heavy oak door open, expecting a process server or a bank representative. Instead, a tall, impeccably dressed older man stood on the porch, holding a leather briefcase and wearing a somber expression. He had silver hair at his temples and piercing blue eyes that looked hauntingly familiar.
"Can I help you?" Elena asked, her guard instantly going up.
The man removed his tailored wool coat, stepping past her into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. He looked around the empty hallway before fixing his gaze entirely on Elena.
"Good morning, Elena," the man said, his voice deep and resonant. "It’s been a very long time. I assume you don't remember your uncle Richard."
Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. Richard Sinclair—Julian’s estranged uncle and the former head of the Sinclair family fortune, a man who had vanished from their lives a decade ago under mysterious circumstances.

"Richard?" Elena whispered, taking a step back. "What are you doing here?"
Richard placed his briefcase on the console table and looked at her with a chilling, knowing smile. "I'm here to tell you that Julian didn't just steal from your father's estate. He stole something belonging to me, and I'm here to collect it."
