Chapter 7: The Bail Hearing**

The county courtroom was packed with reporters. Mark sat beside his high-priced criminal defense team, wearing an immaculate charcoal suit. His posture exuded the quiet dignity of a wrongfully accused professional.

The lead defense attorney addressed the judge: "Your Honor, Mr. Mercer is a pillar of this legal community. What we have here is a tragic escalation of severe marital discord, exacerbated by the complainant's documented psychological instability."

The judge looked toward the prosecution. Detective Diaz signaled the assistant district attorney, who stepped forward with a new motion.

"Your Honor, the state introduces newly secured physical evidence intercepted this morning: a federal delivery of banned toxic compounds, matched by lot number to the substance found in Mrs. Mercer’s seized prescription bottles. Furthermore, financial analysis reveals payments from Mr. Mercer's private accounts to an uncertified lab technician in Scranton."

Elena watched Mark’s face from the third row. For the first time, his calm composure cracked. His jaw clenched, and his eyes darted toward the exit doors where two federal marshals had just entered.
