Chapter 1: The Glass Shards of Trust**

Elena stared at the amber bottle resting inside the clear evidence bag. Her hands, still encased in thin latex gloves, trembled against the polished marble of the kitchen counter. For years, the mild dizziness and morning fogs had been written off as exhaustion, stress, or the lingering phantom of post-partum depression. Mark had always been there with a glass of water, smoothing down her collar, murmuring reassurances with the polished cadence of a trial lawyer.
Officer Martinez stood by the entryway, his hand resting casually near his duty belt. Behind him, Mark’s mother, Evelyn, clutched her leather handbag against her beige tailored suit, her knuckles turning bone-white.
"Elena, darling, this is absurd," Evelyn said, her voice wavering between aristocratic authority and sheer terror. "Mark is a respected partner at the firm. You’ve been under strain."
"He was replacing my thyroid medication," Elena said quietly. Her voice was flat, devoid of theatrics, carrying the weight of sudden, brutal clarity. "Leo saw him in the pantry two nights ago with a pill crusher."
Mark stood beside the archway, perfectly upright in his navy tailored suit. Not a hair was out of place. He offered a tight, pitying smile toward the officer. "My wife has had recurring panic episodes, Officer. We’re working through a private medical crisis."
Leo stepped forward from behind his mother. At eight years old, his gaze was unnervingly steady. "I hid the real bottle in my LEGO bin, Dad. The one you gave Mom this morning had grey powder inside."

Officer Martinez looked between the boy and the man. The atmosphere in the sunlit foyer shifted from awkward domestic dispute to an active crime scene. Mark’s polished smile faltered, just for a fraction of a second, revealing the cold calculations underneath.
