Chapter 3: The Secret in the Subfloor**

Elena knew nothing about a basement safe. The house had been built under Mark’s strict architectural supervision five years ago. To her, the basement was just a finished playroom and a climate-controlled wine cellar.
Leaving Leo asleep with her sister Sarah, who arrived at dawn, Elena descended the basement stairs. The air smelled faintly of cedar and dry concrete. She moved past the neatly stacked board games and approached the wine rack. Behind the third row of Pinot Noir, she spotted a seam in the wood paneling that didn't match the surrounding grain.
Using a flathead screwdriver, she pried the panel loose. Behind it sat a digital lockbox.
She stared at the keypad. Mark’s birthday failed. Leo’s birthday failed. On a hunch, she entered the date Mark’s previous fiancée had died in what had been ruled a tragic single-car accident eight years ago: *0-9-1-4*.
The mechanism clicked.

Inside were three items: an offshore bank ledger under an LLC named *Aegis Holdings*, an audio recorder, and an unopened life insurance policy on Elena worth four million dollars, complete with a double-indemnity rider for accidental poisoning. But the most chilling discovery was a medical file labeled with another woman's name: *Claire Vance*.
