Chapter 2: The Silent House**

By midnight, the flashing blue lights had vanished, leaving Elena and Leo in an oppressive silence. Mark had been taken in for formal questioning, though his attorney was already filing emergency bail motions. The house, once a sanctuary of suburban warmth, felt like an elaborate theatrical stage where every prop had been rigged.

Elena walked through the kitchen, touching the ordinary items—the coffee maker, the spice rack, the filtered water pitcher. How much of her life had been subtly manipulated? She remembered the sudden bouts of confusion during business meetings, the missed school pickups she had wept over, believing her mind was failing.

Leo sat on the barstool, drinking warm milk. "Are you going to get sick again, Mom?"

Elena knelt before him, taking his small hands in hers. "No, Leo. Never again. You saved me."

"I was scared," he admitted, his eyes welling with quiet tears. "Dad told me that if I told anyone, you’d have to go away to a special hospital where they lock the doors."

A cold rage settled into Elena’s chest, replacing the lingering fog of the sedatives. It wasn't just about survival anymore; it was about reclaiming the truth Mark had systematically dismantled. She looked at her phone. A text notification lit up the locked screen from an unknown number: *Do not give Martinez the basement safe key.*
