Chapter 9: The Collapse of an Empire

The word RICO hung in the humid Florida air like a thunderclap. Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting frantically between the federal agents, the idling SUVs, and Julian Vance, who stood watching with cold detachment. The illusion of untouchable wealth that Arthur had cultivated for decades dissolved in a matter of seconds.

“This is an outrage,” Arthur sputtered, trying to maintain a facade of corporate dignity as the federal agents moved in, their movements efficient and practiced. “My legal team will have your badges by morning. This man—Vance—he’s a disgruntled former employee with forged documents!”

“Mr. Vance is a cooperating federal witness who provided the forensic audits that secured your indictment three hours ago,” the lead agent said flatly, grabbing Arthur’s arm and spinning him around to apply the steel handcuffs. The metallic click echoed sharply against the aluminum hull of the jet.

Victoria finally reached the bottom of the stairs, stepping onto the tarmac. She did not flinch as Arthur was pushed past her toward the back of the federal SUV.

“Victoria! You stupid bitch!” Arthur shouted, his face contorting with rage as the veneer of sophistication completely shattered. “You knew about the accounts! You signed the quarterly transfers!”

“I signed what you placed in front of me while telling me it was routine board approval,” Victoria replied, her voice icy and controlled. She stepped closer to the window of the vehicle as they pushed him inside. “And as of twenty minutes ago, my signature is on the federal forfeiture papers confirming that I am turning over every cent of your hidden assets to the restitution fund.”

Arthur snarled something unintelligible before the heavy door slammed shut, cutting off his voice. The SUV’s tires spun slightly on the asphalt before accelerating away toward the main perimeter gate, followed by the second vehicle. The flashing red and blue lights faded into the distance, leaving behind the quiet hum of the Gulfstream’s auxiliary power unit and the gentle rustle of palm trees in the coastal breeze.

Julian stood nearby, watching the vehicle disappear. He walked over, holding the manila folder in one hand. The tension that had defined their initial encounter in the jet cabin had given way to a strange, quiet stillness.

“Well,” Julian said softly. “That’s one way to end a marriage.”

Victoria pulled off her sunglasses, wiping a stray tear from her cheek before looking up at him. Her eyes, no longer hidden behind tinted glass, looked tired, older, but undeniably clear. “You planned this down to the minute, didn’t you?”

“I planned for justice,” Julian corrected gently. “The rest was just Arthur’s impatience doing the work for us.”
