Chapter 4: Turbulence Ahead

The steady hum of the jet engines provided a hypnotic rhythm, but the emotional climate inside the cabin remained dangerously volatile. Victoria finally picked up the deposition, her fingers tracing the ink of her father’s signature. The realization that she had been a pawn in a much larger, more ruthless game orchestrated by Arthur Sterling began to shatter the carefully constructed narrative she had lived by for over a decade.
“Why now?” Victoria asked, her voice cracking slightly as she set the paper down. She kept her face turned away, unwilling to let Julian see the vulnerability creeping past her defenses. “If you had this evidence a year ago, why wait until today to walk onto this plane?”
“Because up until this morning, you were still fighting to protect his assets in court,” Julian replied, closing the manila folder with a quiet thud. “You spent the last six months trying to freeze my business accounts under the assumption that I was the aggressor. I had to let the legal system run its course until your immunity agreements fell apart.”
“I didn’t know about the embezzlement,” she said, her voice dropping to a near-whisper.
“You knew he didn’t earn his first ten million through shipping contracts,” Julian countered, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. “You liked the galas, the private jets, the immunity that comes with old money. You traded our future for a diamond-encrusted cage, Victoria. And when the door locked from the outside, you blamed the man who tried to warn you.”
Victoria turned sharply, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden resurgence of pride. “You think you’re so righteous, Julian? You left me alone in Chicago with nothing but a suitcase and a mountain of debt bearing your name. I had to claw my way up from the bottom while you licked your wounds in Europe.”
“I was running from federal indictments fabricated by your current husband,” Julian corrected sharply, his restraint holding, though his jaw tightened. “I spent three years hiding in Munich while Interpol tracked a passport that Arthur had flagged under my name. I didn’t leave you; I was driven out at gunpoint by men working for your father’s security detail.”

The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating. The reality of the past began to align in Victoria’s mind, connecting memories she had long suppressed—the sudden disappearance of her luggage, the armed men who escorted her from their apartment, the immediate arrival of Arthur Sterling into her life like a savior. It had all been engineered.
Captain Miller emerged quietly from the cockpit, holding two bottles of still water. He placed one near Julian and the other beside Victoria, offering a sympathetic nod before returning to the flight deck. The pilot had seen enough corporate warfare to know that the wealthy were often the most impoverished souls on earth.
