Chapter 8: The Tarmac Confrontation

The airstairs lowered with a mechanical whir, extending down to the asphalt where three black SUVs idled with their emergency lights flashing. Two men in dark suits bearing federal insignia stood near the base of the stairs, flanked by local airport security. A few yards away, standing near the open door of the lead vehicle, was Arthur Sterling.

At sixty, Arthur still maintained the imposing physique of a corporate predator, though his silver hair was disheveled by the coastal breeze and his expensive bespoke suit was unbuttoned at the collar. He had expected to meet his private pilot to finalize his escape to the Bahamas; instead, he was staring up at his estranged wife and the ghost he had spent a decade trying to bury.

Julian descended the stairs first, his dark shirt contrasting sharply against the bright headlights of the federal vehicles. He walked with a calm, measured pace, the duffel bag slung casually over one shoulder. He stopped a few feet from the federal agents, his eyes fixed entirely on Arthur.

Arthur ignored Julian, his gaze shooting past him toward the top of the stairs where Victoria appeared, descending slowly with an elegance that defied the chaos surrounding them.

“Victoria!” Arthur called out, his voice a practiced blend of authority and feigned panic. “Thank God. What is going on here? Get away from him—that man is a criminal who hijacked our flight plan!”

Victoria paused halfway down the stairs, her dark sunglasses hiding her expression as she looked down at the man she had called husband for ten years. The voice that had once commanded boardrooms and dictated social circles now sounded hollow, desperate, and small.

“The only thing hijacked here, Arthur, is my life,” Victoria said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet tarmac.

Arthur’s face flushed a dark, mottled red. He took a step forward, but the federal agent on the left immediately stepped into his path, placing a hand firmly on the hilt of his holstered sidearm.

“Mr. Sterling, step back and keep your hands where we can see them,” the lead agent instructed, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. “Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and corporate asset embezzlement under RICO statutes.”
