THE AIRSPACE OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: A New Horizon

The private hangar was quiet save for the distant sound of waves breaking against the distant shoreline. Captain Miller stood near the doorway of the aircraft, smoking a quiet cigarette and giving Julian and Victoria the space they needed. The confrontation on the tarmac had left the air thick with unresolved history, but the heavy storm clouds of deception had finally broken.

“What happens to the house?” Victoria asked, gesturing vaguely toward the gated perimeter that led to the Palm Beach estate where she and Arthur had lived for the past eight years.

“The estate was purchased using the capital embezzled from my father’s lab in 2011,” Julian explained, leaning against the fender of a parked airport cart. “Legally, it reverts to Vance Capital as part of the asset recovery settlement. But the federal government has placed a temporary injunction on all properties pending the trial.”

“So I’m homeless,” she said with a dry, humorless chuckle, pulling her cream blazer tighter against the evening breeze.

“You have a suite reserved at the Breakers under your maiden name,” Julian said without missing a beat. “Paid for by the liquidation of your personal jewelry sales authorized by the court receiver. You won’t be sleeping on the streets, Victoria.”

She looked at him in surprise, her dark eyes searching his face for a catch. “Why are you helping me? After everything I did—after the way I walked away when your father’s company fell apart—why extend a hand?”

“Because I didn’t survive fourteen years of exile just to become as bitter as the men who destroyed my family,” Julian said quietly. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a register meant only for her. “You made a choice under pressure, Victoria. Just like Arthur forced you into a corner. I’m not your warden. You’re free to walk away right now and never see me again.”

Victoria stood in silence, the weight of her choices pressing down on her. For the first time in her adult life, she had no status, no corporate backing, no wealthy husband to hide behind, and no social standing to protect. She was simply Victoria—stripped of her armor, standing on a Florida tarmac with nothing left to lose.

“I don’t want to walk away,” she whispered, the admission catching in her throat. “I don’t even know who I am without the lies.”

“Then start by figuring out the truth,” Julian said, offering her a simple, steady hand. “The past is gone, Victoria. But the estate has a vault in the foundation that needs a Vance family member to open it. And I think you might want to see what’s inside.”
