Chapter 5: Unraveling the Network

Victoria unscrewed the cap of the water bottle with trembling fingers, taking a slow sip to steady her breathing. The anger that had defined her entrance onto the jet had entirely evaporated, replaced by a cold, numbing realization of betrayal. Arthur Sterling was not the brilliant industrialist he pretended to be; he was a corporate scavenger who had systematically destroyed her family, her past, and her marriage to steal a fortune built on stolen patents.

“What does Arthur want with the Palm Beach estate?” Victoria asked, her voice regaining a fraction of its composure.

“It’s not about the real estate,” Julian replied, opening his duffel bag again to pull out a different set of documents—blueprints and patent applications bearing his own signature from fifteen years ago. “It’s about the clean energy tech my father’s lab developed before the takeover. Arthur stripped the assets, but he could never commercialize them without the original cryptographic keys. Keys that were encrypted onto a physical hard drive hidden inside the foundation of the Palm Beach house.”

Victoria stared at the blueprints. “That’s why he insisted we spend every winter down there. He wasn’t resting; he was tearing the house apart looking for something.”

“And failing,” Julian added. “Because my father hid the drive in a vault that requires biometric verification from a Vance family member. Which is why Arthur needed you to stay married to him—he thought your presence in my old life might give him leverage, or at least keep me distracted while he searched.”

“And instead, he filed for a quiet divorce last month thinking he could cut me loose before the federal investigation hit,” Victoria said bitterly, piecing together the timeline of her own abandonment. “He gave me a settlement of pocket change and told me to take this flight to our secondary residence while he ‘restructured’ his assets in Europe.”

“He was packing his own parachute,” Julian agreed. “Only he didn’t realize that the flight manifest for this specific aircraft was already transferred to my control as part of a debt-settlement default he signed three years ago when he borrowed against his shipping fleet.”

Victoria looked at Julian, seeing the man she had loved before the ambition and the lies poisoned their world. Beneath the hardened exterior and the years of exile, the core of who he was remained intact—analytical, patient, and methodical.

“What happens when we land?” she asked quietly.

“Federal marshals are waiting on the tarmac in West Palm Beach,” Julian said without hesitation. “They aren’t there for you, Victoria. They’re there for Arthur. He flew down yesterday under the guise of an emergency board meeting. But his private charter was grounded by the FAA an hour ago.”
