Chapter 6: The Anatomy of a Heist

The Gulfstream cut through the upper atmosphere, leaving a white streak against the deepening purple of the twilight sky. Inside the cabin, the tension had transformed from explosive hostility into a grim, collaborative focus. Victoria sat across from Julian, the manila folder spread open between them like a battle map of their shared history.

“How did you even find me?” Victoria asked, tracing the logo of Vance Capital on the top document. “After all these years, I changed my number twice, moved across three states, and erased every trace of my past in Chicago.”

“You didn’t erase everything,” Julian said softly, gesturing to the gold bracelet on her wrist. “Your mother’s heirloom. You wore it to every charity gala covered by the society columns. When you live in the spotlight, Victoria, it’s very hard to stay hidden. I didn’t need to look for you; your husband’s public relations team ensured your face was on every financial journal in the country.”

“And you waited until he was vulnerable?”

“I waited until the evidence was ironclad,” Julian corrected. “Revenge is a poor motivator, Victoria. Justice requires patience. If I had moved against him five years ago, his lawyers would have buried me in injunctions. It took a decade of forensic accounting to trace the money through the Cayman accounts and back to the shell companies he used to bankrupt my father.”

Victoria looked down at her hands. The elegant manicured nails, the sparkling diamond ring from Arthur, the gold jewelry—it all suddenly felt heavy, like lead weights dragging her down into an abyss. “I was a willing participant,” she admitted, her voice barely audible over the hum of the turbines. “I let him rewrite my history because I was afraid of being poor again. I wanted the safety net.”

“Safety is an illusion,” Julian said, his voice softening just enough to betray the lingering remnants of empathy he still held for her. “Arthur built his entire empire on stolen foundations. It was bound to collapse the moment someone refused to play by his rules.”

“What happens to me now?” she asked, looking up, her eyes finally devoid of their defensive armor.

“That depends entirely on what you choose to do when we land,” Julian said. “The federal prosecutors offered me a cooperation agreement. They need someone who understands the internal operations of Sterling Shipping to sign off on the asset forfeiture. Your signature on these secondary audit logs will clear your name of any complicity in the initial fraud.”

Victoria stared at him, searching his face for any sign of a trap. Finding none, a profound sense of relief washed over her, mingled with the bitter grief of a life wasted on a lie. “You’re giving me a way out?”

“I’m giving you the truth,” Julian said simply. “What you do with it is up to you.”
