Chapter 13: Dawn on the Coast

The morning sun rose over the Atlantic, casting a brilliant golden glow across the manicured lawns of the Palm Beach estate. The federal seals on the front doors had been updated with new notices of receivership, but inside the library, the atmosphere was one of quiet restoration.

Julian sat at the mahogany desk, reviewing the final inventory sheets from the Pelican case while the federal receiver finalized the property transfer documents. Victoria stood by the large arched window, looking out over the sparkling ocean. She wore a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers—no gold jewelry, no designer sunglasses, no heavy armor to protect her from the world.

The transition was not magical or instantaneous; the legal battles with Arthur’s remaining corporate attorneys would drag on for months in federal courts, and the public fallout from the RICO indictments would dominate the financial news cycle for weeks. But the internal war was over.

A knock at the library door interrupted their quiet focus. Captain Miller stepped inside, holding a pair of boarding passes.

“The flight crew has completed pre-flight checks on the Gulfstream,” Miller announced respectfully. “We have clearance to depart for Chicago whenever you’re ready, Mr. Vance.”

Julian looked up from the desk and nodded. “Thank you, Miller. Give us ten minutes.”

The pilot offered a polite nod and withdrew, closing the door softly behind him.

Julian stood up, sliding the final document into his duffel bag. He walked over to where Victoria stood by the window, watching the waves roll onto the shore.

“Are you ready?” he asked.

Victoria turned to face him, her dark hair tied back in a simple, loose ponytail. There was no trace of the elegant, furious woman who had stormed onto the jet in New Jersey just twenty-four hours earlier. In her place stood someone far stronger—a person tempered by fire, stripped of illusion, and ready to face reality on her own terms.

“I have a bag to pack,” she said with a quiet, steady smile. “Though I seem to remember someone throwing my old duffel bag off the jet yesterday.”

“I think we can find a replacement at the terminal,” Julian replied, his eyes holding hers with a deep, unspoken understanding.
