Chapter 9

The heavy silence of the subterranean corridor was broken only by the ragged breathing of the fallen brawler and the relentless, mechanical hum of the server racks. The man struggled against the magnetic lock on the floor grates, cursing under his breath as he realized his steel-toed boots were held fast by an industrial-grade force field. Jax stood paralyzed against the raw concrete wall, his hands raised instinctively in a defensive posture, though he had nothing left to defend himself with.

Julian stepped past the struggling brawler, walking slowly toward the central server vault door. He didn't look back at Jax; his focus remained entirely on the primary terminal where the physical data tap was still blinking with amber warning lights.

"You're out of your depth, Jax," Julian said calmly, his fingers dancing across the keypad of the main console to sever the unauthorized data link. "Apex Digital was never a real startup. Your investors are shell companies tied to international data brokers. You traded your freedom for promises of seed money that were never going to materialize."

Jax swallowed hard, his bravado completely shattered. The arrogant playboy persona was stripped away, exposing a frightened, desperate young man who had bet on the wrong horse. "You don't understand," Jax stammered, his voice trembling. "They own my debts, man. If I don't deliver these neural weights, I'm finished. They said it was just a corporate audit. They didn't tell me it was federal-level espionage."

Julian paused, his hand resting on the terminal. He turned his head slightly to look at Jax, his expression remaining neutral, neither sympathetic nor cruel. "Ignorance isn't an excuse when you're stealing someone's legacy, Jax. My father spent his entire life building tools to help people connect, not weapons to exploit them. Your debts are your own responsibility, but what you did tonight crosses a line that cannot be uncrossed."

Julian tapped the final command sequence into the console. With a sharp hiss, the physical data tap disconnected, sparking harmlessly before sliding off the terminal and clattering onto the concrete floor. At the same moment, the magnetic plates beneath the brawler's boots deactivated with a soft click, releasing him from the floor.

"AI Butler," Julian commanded clearly. "Initiate lockdown of sector four. Contact federal cyber crimes division and local authorities. Tell them we have two unauthorized individuals secured in the subterranean vault."

"Lockdown confirmed," the AI replied instantly. "Authorities have been notified. Estimated arrival time: eight minutes."

Julian turned to face Jax directly. "You can wait here for the federal agents, or you can sit down and cooperate with the investigation to mitigate your sentencing. Those are your only two options."

Jax slowly slid down the concrete wall, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his prison sentence finally settled over him. The party was truly over, and the morning light was beginning to break over the hills, bringing accountability with it.
