Chapter 12

By noon, the new interim management team arrived, efficiently taking over the estate operations with quiet professionalism. Julian spent the afternoon in his father's study, reviewing the encrypted files recovered from the subterranean mainframe. The data-harvesting attempt had failed completely, thanks to the robust neural architecture his father had built, but the breach highlighted vulnerabilities that needed immediate attention.

Julian opened a development environment terminal, his fingers moving rapidly across the mechanical keyboard. He began rewriting the estate's core security protocols, integrating adaptive AI subroutines that could autonomously detect and neutralize unauthorized data probes before they reached the primary firewall. It was complex, exhausting work, but as he watched lines of clean, elegant code compile successfully on the screen, he felt a profound sense of purpose. This was what his father had always wanted him to do—not merely inherit the empire, but evolve it.

The office door opened quietly, and Sarah, the head of the newly appointed management team, stepped into the room with a polite knock. "Excuse me, Mr. Vance. The perimeter diagnostics have been updated, and the new security detail has completed their sweep of the canyon ridge. Everything is secure."

Julian looked up from the glowing monitor, offering a welcoming nod. "Thank you, Sarah. How is the staff transition going?"

"Smoothly," she replied, holding a neatly organized digital tablet. "We've vetted three candidates for the permanent estate manager position. All have extensive backgrounds in secure facility management. I've scheduled interviews for tomorrow morning."

"Good. Let's make sure our vetting process is twice as rigorous moving forward," Julian said, leaning back in the leather chair. "Last night proved that superficial charm can easily mask malicious intent. We don't want anyone on these grounds who doesn't understand the weight of what's being built here."

"Understood, Julian. We'll ensure absolute discretion and loyalty from here on out," Sarah affirmed, turning to leave.

As the door clicked shut, Julian stood up and walked over to the large window overlooking the valley. The sun was beginning its slow descent toward the western horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of orange and purple. The events of the past twenty-four hours felt like a lifetime ago. He had faced down arrogance, unmasked corporate espionage, and successfully defended his father's legacy without raising his voice or losing his composure. He was no longer just a college student living in his father's shadow; he was the master of his own domain, ready to steer the Vance legacy into a brighter, more secure future.
