Chapter 5

The ambient hum of the server racks provided a steady, rhythmic pulse in the otherwise silent study. Julian set the framed photograph back down on the mahogany desk, his fingers lingering on the cool wood. He sat down in his late father's oversized leather chair, the leather creaking slightly under his weight. It felt too big, swallowing him up, a physical reminder of the enormous shoes he was expected to fill. On the screen of the integrated desktop terminal, a blinking notification caught his eye. It was an encrypted file marked with his father's personal signature key, dated just three days before Richard's sudden passing.

Julian frowned, leaning closer to the monitor. He placed his right index finger on the biometric scanner built into the keyboard. The green light flashed twice, validating his identity as the primary trust beneficiary, and the encrypted document unlocked with a soft chime.

The file wasn't a financial ledger or a corporate merger agreement. It was a personal video journal entry. Julian hesitated for a moment, his cursor hovering over the play button. Hearing his father's voice again, especially unvarnished and recorded in the quiet hours of the night, felt like opening a sealed tomb. With a quiet sigh, he clicked play.

Richard Vance appeared on the screen, looking older and noticeably more fatigued than in the sailing photograph. The lighting in the study behind past-Richard was dim, casting deep shadows beneath his eyes. He looked directly into the camera lens with an intensity that made Julian sit up straighter in his seat.

"Julian, if you're watching this, it means the trust has transferred and you've finally come home," Richard's recorded voice said, sounding tired yet strangely relieved. "I didn't leave you a simple fortune, son. A fortune without purpose is just a target for men like Miller and the vultures circling the valley. Apex Digital, and several other shell corporations operating out of this zip code, aren't legitimate tech startups. They're fronts for something much darker—an industrial data-harvesting syndicate that has been systematically siphoning proprietary neural network models from our servers."

Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. The casual party crashers, the compromised estate manager, the arrogant grifter named Jax—they weren't just random party animals trespassing on a billionaire's estate. They were part of a coordinated corporate espionage ring testing the security perimeter of the Vance estate.

"I tried to stop them legally," Richard continued on the screen, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "But the political connections run deep. They infiltrated my inner circle. If you found this file, it means you're already inside the house. Trust no one on the payroll, Julian. The AI Butler is the only system I built that hasn't been compromised. Use it. Protect what's left."

The video cut to black abruptly, leaving Julian staring at his own reflection in the dark monitor. The quiet comfort of the study evaporated instantly, replaced by the chilling realization that he was standing directly in the crosshairs of a dangerous conspiracy.
