Chapter 7

The air grew noticeably cooler as Julian descended the concrete spiral staircase into the subterranean levels of the estate. The architectural brutalism of exposed steel beams and raw poured concrete gave this hidden floor an industrial, utilitarian feel, far removed from the luxurious minimalist aesthetic of the upper living quarters. Soft emergency lighting cast a dim amber glow along the corridor, painting long, distorted shadows against the walls.
Julian moved with deliberate caution, keeping his steps light and silent against the polished floor. The hum of the massive server racks grew louder, a deep, resonant vibration that he could feel humming through the soles of his shoes. According to the estate blueprint mapped in his memory, the primary server vault was located at the end of the long corridor, protected by a blast door that required both biometric verification and the quantum override card currently resting in his hand.
As he rounded the final corner, the amber light flickered and died. Total darkness swallowed the hallway for three agonizing seconds before the emergency backup generators kicked in with a dull hum, washing the space in a sickly green hue.
Standing fifty feet away, illuminated by the greenish glow of a portable diagnostic console plugged directly into the wall-mounted terminal, was Jax. The charismatic, arrogant party host was gone; in his place stood a desperate operative stripped of his designer shirt, now wearing a dark tactical vest over his bare chest. Next to him crouched a second man—older, built like a brawler, with a shaved head and a heavy-duty physical data tap connected to the main conduit.
"I'm telling you, the master override should have bypassed the local firewall by now," Jax hissed, tapping frantically at his portable console. His voice lacked its previous swagger, replaced by a jittery, panicked edge.
"Shut up and keep feeding the bridge," the brawler growled back without looking up. "If we don't dump the neural weights within the next ten minutes, the entire syndicate will cut us loose. You brought us here, Jax. You fix the connection."
Julian watched them from the relative safety of an intersecting service alcove. He realized that Jax wasn't the mastermind of this operation; he was merely the errand boy, the charismatic face used to infiltrate high-society circles while the real operatives did the dirty work behind the scenes. But regardless of Jax's rank in the criminal food chain, he was actively trying to steal technology that could destroy millions of lives.

Julian slid his hand into his pocket, gripping the quantum override card. He needed to draw them away from the server vault door before they breached the physical firewall. Stepping out from the alcove, Julian allowed his boot to intentionally kick against an empty metal toolbox left on the floor.
The metallic clatter echoed sharply down the corridor. Jax and the brawler froze instantly, spinning around toward the sound with wide, startled eyes.
