Chapter 8

The sharp metallic clatter reverberated down the concrete corridor, freezing Jax and his accomplice in their tracks. The brawler reacted with instantaneous aggression, dropping his portable data cable, reaching beneath his tactical vest, and drawing a heavy-duty compact crowbar with a menacing grunt. Jax stumbled backward against the wall, his chest heaving as he stared into the dim green light of the hallway.
"Who's there?" Jax yelled, his voice cracking slightly under the pressure. "Show yourself!"
Julian stepped out from the shadows of the service alcove, walking slowly into the center of the corridor. He kept his hands visible, his expression completely calm, mirroring the exact demeanor he had displayed by the pool earlier that evening. The contrast between his relaxed posture and the palpable panic of the intruders was stark.
"You really don't know when to quit, do you, Jax?" Julian asked, his voice carrying clearly over the deep hum of the server racks. "I told you to leave the property. Breaking and entering into a subterranean vault elevates this far beyond a simple trespassing charge."
Jax's eyes widened in recognition as he focused on the young man in the grey t-shirt. "It's you. The kid with the backpack." He let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "You're Richard Vance's kid. The college student. You think you can just walk down here and stop us?"
"I don't think I can stop you," Julian replied quietly, taking another measured step forward. "I know I can. Because unlike you, I actually built the code that runs this facility. And right now, every biometric sensor down here is locked to my nervous system."
The brawler didn't wait for pleasantries. With a guttural roar, he charged down the corridor, swinging the heavy steel crowbar in a wide arc aimed directly at Julian's shoulder.
Julian didn't flinch or try to dodge backward. Instead, as the brawler closed the distance, Julian tapped the interface of his smartwatch twice and dropped into a low, defensive stance taught to him by his university's martial arts instructors. At the exact second the brawler reached the threshold of sector four, Julian triggered a localized magnetic surge built into the floor grates.

A sharp electrical snap echoed through the corridor. The magnetic plates beneath the floor instantly magnetized, locking the brawler's heavy steel-toed boots firmly to the ground. The unexpected pull caught the man completely off guard; his momentum carried his upper body forward while his feet remained anchored to the floor. He crashed hard onto the concrete with a heavy thud, dropping the crowbar as the impact knocked the wind out of him.
Jax stared in absolute horror as his muscle was neutralized in less than three seconds. He looked from the fallen brawler back to Julian, whose calm, steady gaze felt more terrifying than any weapon.
