Chapter 9: Breaking the Grid

The heavy metal doors of the vehicle shed shuddered as Julian threw his weight against them, slipping inside just as the dark SUV shifted into reverse. The interior smelled of gasoline, old dust, and damp canvas. Through the shattered rear window of the vehicle, Clara gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity, while Maya leaned over the center console, frantically waving him toward the passenger side.
Julian didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the tailgate, pulling himself into the back seat just as Clara slammed the accelerator to the floor.
The SUV tore backward through the rotting wooden doors of the shed, showering splinters and glass across the gravel driveway. Outside, two tactical operatives emerged from the tree line, raising their weapons, but Clara swung the heavy vehicle around in a wide, aggressive arc, kicking up a blinding cloud of dust and loose gravel that obscured their targets.
“Hold on!” Clara screamed, her voice cracking with adrenaline as she spun the steering wheel and rocketed down the overgrown logging trail toward the highway.
The vehicle bounced violently over rocks and deep ruts, throwing Julian against the side panel. He braced himself, keeping his eyes locked on the rearview mirror. Through the swirling dust, the figures of their pursuers shrank into the distance, swallowed by the dense pine forest. But Julian knew this was only a temporary reprieve. Whoever had hired those mercenaries possessed deep pockets, satellite tracking, and infinite patience.
“Are you both alright?” Julian asked, leaning forward between the front seats to check on Clara and Maya.
Maya nodded rapidly, her chest heaving as she clutched the rolled canvas portrait of his face against her chest like a talisman. She looked at Julian, the residual terror in her eyes slowly giving way to a fierce, searching curiosity.
“Who were those men, Dad?” Maya asked, her voice trembling slightly. “Why are they trying to kill us?”
Julian exchanged a long, heavy look with Clara, who kept her eyes fixed on the winding dirt road ahead. The silence in the cabin grew thick, broken only by the roaring engine and the crunch of tires on gravel.
“They work for a man named Vance Corporation’s shadow board,” Julian said quietly, choosing his words with agonizing care. “Three years ago, I discovered they were embezzling billions from public infrastructure funds to finance private security networks. When I threatened to expose them, they tried to erase me. When they couldn't reach me, they targeted my family.”
Clara glanced sideways at Julian, her grip on the steering wheel tightening until her knuckles turned white. “And that’s why I had to hide her, Julian. I couldn't let them use Maya as leverage to force your silence. I faked her death records, bought this isolated estate under a shell company, and kept her locked away from the world.”
“You also kept me in a living hell, Clara,” Julian replied, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only a profound, crushing exhaustion. “You let me mourn my own daughter for thirty-six months.”
Before Clara could answer, the dashboard display of the SUV flickered violently, cutting out the navigation system. A high-pitched, steady alarm began to beep from the vehicle’s internal diagnostic computer.
Clara cursed under her breath, staring at the glowing red warning light on the instrument cluster.

“What is it?” Julian asked, leaning closer.
“They didn’t just track your digital footprint,” Clara whispered, her face draining of all color. “The vehicle’s internal GPS... it’s locked onto a remote command frequency. They know our exact coordinates in real-time.”
