Chapter 15: Dawn Over the City

The static crackling through the operatives' headsets died away completely, replaced by dead silence. The lead tactical officer cursed under his breath, looking down at his dark, unresponsive comms unit before looking up at Julian standing firm beside the concrete pylon. Without their satellite link, remote command, and encrypted tracking data, the hit squad had legally and operationally ceased to exist. They were no longer an authorized black-ops unit; they were armed criminals out in the open daylight near a federal highway.

Julian stepped forward, dropping to one knee so he was eye-level with his daughter. He gently reached out, taking the rolled canvas from her hands and setting it aside. Then, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

“They’re gone,” Julian whispered, burying his face in her blonde hair as tears finally broke free, tracing hot tracks down his stubbled cheeks. “And nobody is ever taking you away from me again.”
