Chapter 1

The golden mirrors of the grand hallway fractured Julian’s reflection into a thousand jagged slivers, matching the chaos tearing through his chest. He stood frozen in his dark tuxedo jacket, the white open-collared shirt feeling suddenly too tight against his racing pulse. Across the polished wooden floors, Clara stood gripped by terror, her dark red satin gown whispering against the floorboards as she clutched the pale arm of the young maid. The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a cold, blinding glare over the scene, illuminating the suffocating tension that hung thick in the air.
Clara stepped forward, her eyes wide with frantic desperation, trying to bridge the gap between Julian and the weeping girl.
“Julian, please, don’t listen to her, she’s terrified and doesn’t know what she’s saying,” Clara pleaded, her voice trembling as she attempted to pull the maid back.
Julian ignored Clara entirely, his gaze locked onto the maid’s tear-stained face. He took a heavy, deliberate step forward, his jaw tight with suppressed rage and disbelief.
“Quiet, Clara,” Julian snapped, his voice dangerously low. “Let her speak. You said my daughter must never know who I am. Explain yourself right now.”
The maid shook her head violently, tears spilling over her red-rimmed lower lids. She gripped the fabric of her light blue uniform apron, her knuckles turning white.
“I had to tell you, Mr. Vance,” the maid sobbed, her chest heaving as she fought for breath. “For three years, she has lived under this very roof, drawing your face every single day, yet she has no idea you are her father.”
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the girl, his mind reeling as the impossible truth began to take root.
“My daughter?” Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash. “Where is she?”

The maid looked away, her lips trembling uncontrollably before she delivered the final blow.
“She’s upstairs in the art studio right now, looking at her masterwork of you, unaware that you just walked through that front door.”
