Chapter 5

The heavy mahogany doors of the studio stood wide open, but the sanctuary they had just broken open felt suddenly vulnerable, exposed to the cold wind blowing through the vast estate. Julian stood frozen, his arms still half-extended toward Maya, waiting for her to cross the small distance between them. But the young girl remained rooted to the spot, her charcoal pencil still clutched tightly in her right hand as if it were a shield against an unpredictable world.
“You’re my father,” Maya repeated, the words tasting foreign on her tongue. She looked from Julian’s intense, tear-stained face to Clara, who was now standing quietly by the window, staring out into the sprawling, manicured gardens below. “And all this time, while I was sitting in this room drawing a stranger, you were alive.”
“I thought you were dead, Maya,” Julian said, his voice raw and pleading. He took another slow step forward, mindful not to startle her. “Every single day for three years, I believed I had lost my entire family. If I had known you were here—if Clara had given me even a single hint—I would have torn the world apart to reach you.”
Before Maya could respond, a sharp, metallic sound cut through the silence of the room.
Clara stiffened by the window, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared down into the courtyard.
“Julian,” Clara whispered, her voice laced with sudden, icy terror. “Get away from the window.”
Julian ignored her, turning his head to look out past the glass. Down below, parked near the ornate iron gates of the estate, was a black sedan with tinted windows. The engine was idling, and a single figure in a dark trench coat was stepping out from the driver’s side, looking directly up toward the east wing art studio with a pair of binoculars.
The blood drained from Julian’s face. The enemies Clara had spoken of—the ones who had forced them into hiding three years ago—had not given up. They had tracked him here.
“How did they find us?” Julian demanded, turning fiercely toward Clara. “You said this place was secure!”
“It was secure until you forced your way through the front gates in that car!” Clara shouted back, panic finally breaking through her composure. “Your security protocols, your financial tracking—they must have followed your digital footprint all the way to our doorstep!”
Maya dropped her charcoal pencil. It rolled across the wooden floor, snapping in half with a quiet click. She backed away toward the rear of the studio, her eyes wide with mounting horror as she realized the peaceful life she had known was instantly vanishing.
“They’re here for me, aren’t they?” Maya asked, her voice trembling violently.
Julian clenched his fists, the profound sorrow in his chest instantly hardening into cold, protective fury. He stepped in front of his daughter, placing himself between her and the window.

“They aren't taking you,” Julian said, his voice steel-hard. “Not this time.”
Downstairs, the heavy front door of the mansion shuddered with a violent, echoing thud as someone began to force the locks.
