Chapter 12: The Pursuit Below

The metallic scraping sound echoed down the damp brick tunnel again, sharper this time—the unmistakable sound of tactical boots striking the concrete stairs of the maintenance hatch. They had forced the deadbolt.

“Run,” Julian commanded, his voice dropping to a harsh, urgent whisper.

He swept Maya up behind him, pushing her forward into the gloom while Clara took the lead, sweeping the beam of her flashlight back and forth along the uneven ground. They broke into a fast, awkward jog, their boots splashing heavily through the shallow puddles that pooled along the center of the abandoned railway tracks.

Behind them, the distant beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, painting long, swaying shadows against the curved brick walls of the catacomb.

“They’ve got night-vision optics,” Clara panted, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she navigated a sharp bend in the tunnel. “If we reach the old junction fifty yards ahead, we can double back through the drainage pipes.”

Julian kept one hand on Maya’s shoulder, guiding her past a rusted iron cart that had been abandoned on the side of the tracks decades ago. He glanced back over his shoulder. The beam of the pursuers' flashlight was growing closer, bouncing rapidly against the damp stone as the mercenaries closed the distance with terrifying speed.

“Keep going, Maya, don't look back,” Julian urged, shielding her body with his own as they rounded the corner.

They reached the junction, a dark, intersecting maze of concrete culverts and rusted drainage pipes that smelled faintly of oil and stagnant river water. Clara threw herself toward a narrow iron grate set into the side wall, pulling furiously at a rusted lever. With a screech of protesting metal, the grate swung outward, revealing a cramped, circular drainage pipe leading upward toward the faint sound of distant traffic.

“In! Go!” Clara ordered, boosting Maya up into the narrow metal tube.

Maya crawled frantically into the darkness, her elbows scraping against the rough riveted metal. Julian shoved Clara in right behind her, turning around just as the first tactical operative emerged from the main tunnel, raising a suppressed rifle with cold, mechanical precision.

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy iron wrench lying on the old rail bed and hurled it with all his might directly at the operative’s face. The heavy tool struck the man’s tactical helmet with a dull clang, throwing him off balance just long enough for Julian to dive backward into the drainage pipe and kick the heavy iron grate shut behind him.

He threw the internal locking latch into place as a bullet pinged sharply against the metal exterior, ricocheting harmlessly down the dark culvert.
