Chapter 4

Clara stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the floor as she knelt beside Maya and pulled the girl gently back toward her. The tension in the room was palpable, a suffocating weight that pressed down on all three of them. Julian slowly lowered his hands, his eyes red-rimmed and fierce as he glared at Clara, demanding an explanation for the elaborate web of lies that had stolen his life away.
“Tell her the truth, Clara,” Julian demanded, his voice thick with a mixture of rage and heartbreak. “Tell her why you made her live a lie for three years.”
Clara kept her arm firmly around Maya’s shoulders, shielding the girl as if Julian were a sudden threat. She took a deep, trembling breath, her gaze dropping to the floor before she finally met Julian’s burning stare.
“I did it to save her life,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion. “You don't remember, Julian, because you weren't there when the threats started rolling in. The enemies you made in the corporate world weren't content with just destroying your company; they swore they would take everything you loved.”
Maya looked up at Clara, her eyes wide with fear. “Enemies? What enemies, Clara? You always told me my parents died in an accident.”
“Another lie to keep you safe,” Clara answered, her voice breaking as a single tear traced down her cheek. “When the assassins came close three years ago, Julian was forced into hiding. To protect Maya, we faked her death, hid her identity, and brought her to this isolated estate. I had to make her forget Julian, to stop looking for him, because any connection to his bloodline was a death sentence.”
Julian stared at Clara, the pieces of a horrifying puzzle snapping into place. He remembered the night he was forced to flee, the burning wreckage of his car, the hurried phone calls in the dark. He had believed his entire family was dead. He had spent three years mourning at empty graves.
“You could have told me,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “You let me suffer alone.”
“If you had known she was alive, your reckless grief would have gotten us all killed,” Clara fired back, her eyes flashing with defiance. “I kept her safe, Julian. I gave her a home, pencils, paper, a quiet life. But her heart never let you go. That’s why she kept drawing your face from the fragments of memories she refused to lose.”
Maya stood up slowly, her face pale, the magnitude of the deception crashing down on her young shoulders. She looked at Julian, then at Clara, her voice shaking with disbelief.
“So everything I know is a lie?” Maya asked, her voice cracking. “You’re my father?”
May you like
Julian stood up, opening his arms slowly, his eyes pleading for understanding.
“Yes, Maya. I am your father. And I am never leaving you again.”
