Chapter 7: Shadows in the Woods

The metal ceiling hatch buckled under a heavy stomp from above, scattering flakes of old rust and dust over Julian’s shoulders. He didn’t hesitate. He heaved his entire weight against the iron wheel handle, throwing his shoulder into the heavy door until the rusted latch finally gave way with a deafening pop. Daylight flooded the narrow corridor, smelling sharply of wet pine needles and fresh autumn air.

“Out! Go, now!” Julian urged, pushing Maya through the narrow opening and out into the dense, overgrown woods behind the estate.

Clara scrambled through right behind her, her elegant satin gown tearing on a protruding iron bolt as she tumbled onto the damp earth. Julian slipped through last, slamming the heavy iron door shut behind him and throwing the security deadbolt from the outside. It wouldn't hold a determined team for long, but it would buy them precious minutes.

They plunged into the thicket of towering pine trees, the spongy ground muffling the sound of their frantic footsteps. Maya stumbled over a exposed tree root, crying out as she hit the ground, her hands scraping against the rough bark. Julian was instantly by her side, lifting her up with a firm, gentle grip.

“I’m okay, I’m okay,” Maya panted, tears of frustration and exhaustion spilling down her cheeks. She clutched her bruised knee, looking back toward the mansion through the gaps in the trees. “Dad, look.”

Through the pale green canopy, they could see figures moving near the back exit of the estate. Two men in dark tactical gear had emerged from the cellar door Julian had just locked. They scanned the treeline with cold, practiced efficiency, holding silenced firearms low at their sides.

“Keep your head down and stay behind me,” Julian whispered, pulling Maya deeper into the shadow of a massive boulder. He turned to Clara, whose breath came in ragged gasps, her pale face stark against the dark green foliage. “Do you have a vehicle hidden out here? A bug-out car?”

Clara nodded frantically, wiping mud from her forehead with the back of her hand. “About half a mile north, past the old creek bed. There’s an old hunting cabin with an SUV parked inside the shed. The keys are buried under the front step.”

“Move,” Julian commanded, taking the lead. He kept his eyes scanning the perimeter, his senses dialed to their absolute peak.

They ran in silence for what felt like hours, the dense forest closing in around them like a labyrinth. The chill of the afternoon air bit at their skin, but none of them slowed down. Maya’s breath came in ragged gasps, but she kept pace, driven by the sheer terror of what was hunting them.

As they crested a small grassy ridge, the weathered wooden roof of the hunting cabin came into view, half-hidden beneath a blanket of creeping ivy. Julian motioned for them to drop low in the tall grass while he checked the perimeter. The area appeared abandoned, swallowed by the quiet wilderness.

Julian crept toward the front steps of the cabin, dropped to his knees, and shoved his fingers beneath the weathered slab of cedar. His fingers brushed against a cold metal key ring. He pulled it out just as a harsh crack echoed through the quiet forest behind them.

A bullet slammed into the wooden porch post right above Julian’s head, showering him in deadly splinters.

“Down!” Julian roared, spinning around and pulling the keys free as another shot ripped through the air.
