Chapter 8 - The Diner Ambush

The dial tone buzzed harshly in Clara’s ear as Victoria hung up. Panic seized her nervous system. She slammed the heavy receiver onto the cradle and bolted back toward the vinyl booth where Lily was sleeping.
"Lily, wake up, baby girl, we have to move right now," Clara whispered frantically, scooping the toddler into her arms. The little girl groaned softly, clinging to Clara's neck as her eyes fluttered open.
Clara spun around toward the front entrance of the diner, but the glass doors swung open before she could even take two steps. Two towering men in tailored black suits stepped inside, their eyes scanning the room with cold, calculating efficiency. They weren't local police; they were Julian’s private mercenaries, the kind of men who cleaned up corporate messes without leaving a paper trail.
"There she is," one of the men muttered, locking eyes directly with Clara.
Desperation fueled Clara’s movements. She pivoted away from the front doors, sprinting toward the kitchen swinging doors at the back of the diner.
"Hey! Stop right there!" the guard shouted, charging across the linoleum floor.
Clara kicked open the kitchen doors just as a cook dropped a tray of dishes, shattering ceramic plates everywhere. The sudden chaos bought her a few vital seconds. She dodged past a startled dishwasher, threw open the heavy metal rear exit door, and plunged out into the dark, rain-slicked alleyway behind the restaurant.
The cold rain hit her face like needles. The alley was a dead end, boxed in by towering brick tenement buildings on three sides, with overflowing commercial dumpsters blocking the far exit. Clara’s breath came in ragged gasps as she clutched Lily tighter, her heavy work boots slipping on the wet asphalt.
She turned around, pressing her back against the brick wall. The two guards emerged from the diner's back door, stepping slowly into the alley with menacing grins, blocking her only path of escape.
"End of the line, Mrs. Vance," the lead guard chuckled, cracking his knuckles as he advanced. "Mr. Vance wants his wife back home. And he definitely wants his phone back."

Clara looked desperately around the enclosed alley. There was no way out, no witnesses, and no escape. Just as the guard lunged forward to grab her arm, a heavy iron fire escape ladder dangling high above suddenly groaned, creaked, and lowered itself downward with a loud metallic clatter, stopping just inches above Clara's head.
