Chapter 13 - Dawn of a New Era

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray storm clouds, casting a warm, golden illumination over the sparkling skyline of downtown. Inside the federal courthouse steps, a massive throng of journalists, camera crews, and reporters surged forward, flashing blinding camera bulbs and shouting overlapping questions about the massive corporate fraud and child endangerment scandal rocking the city's elite.
Clara walked down the grand granite steps of the courthouse, holding little Lily securely by the hand. Lily wore a bright yellow dress with a cheerful daisy print, her curly brown hair tied back with a matching yellow ribbon. The nightmare of the wedding day felt like a lifetime ago.
Clara wore a sharp, elegant navy blue pantsuit—clean, professional, and entirely her own. No heavy white tulle, no diamond earrings gifted by a monster, and no fake smiles. She stood tall, her posture radiating quiet strength and absolute resilience.
Marcus Sterling walked beside her, carrying a leather briefcase containing the final disposition papers of Julian Vance’s criminal trial. Julian had been denied bail, facing multiple federal indictments for wire fraud, tax evasion, and corporate racketeering, alongside state-level charges of child endangerment and physical assault. His billionaire father’s legal team had abandoned him completely, realizing the digital evidence Clara had secured was airtight and insurmountable.
"Mrs. Vance—excuse me, Ms. Davis," a prominent news reporter called out, thrusting a microphone forward. "Now that Julian Vance’s empire has completely collapsed and you've filed for an immediate, uncontested annulment, what are your plans for the future?"
Clara stopped at the foot of the courthouse steps, looking out across the bustling city streets where thousands of everyday citizens walked freely without fear. She looked down at Lily, who smiled brightly and held up a small drawing of a butterfly she had made during the court proceedings.
"My plan is simple," Clara spoke clearly into the wall of microphones, her voice steady and resonant. "To rebuild my life from the ground up, on my own terms. To raise my daughter in a home filled with genuine love, safety, and unwavering truth. And to ensure that no child ever has to whisper 'Please don't hit me' behind closed doors again."
The reporters erupted into a flurry of camera shutters and respectful applause. Clara smiled softly, turning away from the flashing lights and stepping out into the bright, open morning air.

As they walked down the avenue toward the park, a black luxury sedan pulled up quietly to the curb beside them. The rear door clicked open, and an unexpected face stepped out onto the sidewalk, blocking their path with an envelope in his hand.
