Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the System

The catering van dropped Clara and Lily off near a 24-hour diner on the neon-lit outskirts of downtown. The driver handed Clara a twenty-dollar bill and a warm cup of coffee before speeding away into the rainy night. Clara sat in a vinyl booth near the back of the nearly empty restaurant, nursing the black coffee while Lily slept fitfully across the cracked plastic bench, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket provided by the kind waitress.

Clara stared at her reflection in the greasy windowpane. The oversized gray coveralls hung off her frame, masking the ruined designer gown beneath. She was completely invisible to the modern world. Without her smartphone, she couldn't access her bank accounts, call a lawyer, or retrieve the damning files on Julian’s illegal corporate maneuvers.

If Julian realized those financial documents were still on her missing phone, he wouldn't just be hunting her down to protect his personal reputation—he would hunt her down to prevent a federal indictment that could land him in maximum-security prison for twenty years. A man with that much to lose was infinitely more dangerous than a humiliated groom.

"Need a refill on that, hon?" a tired-looking waitress asked, holding a glass coffee pot.

"No, thank you," Clara replied, forcing a polite smile. "Actually... is there any way I could use your landline phone? It’s an emergency."

The waitress hesitated, eyeing Clara's strange attire—the janitorial cap, the gray overalls, and the sliver of white tulle peeking out at the ankles. "Normally store policy is no customers, but you look like you've been through a war zone. Go ahead, phone's back by the restrooms."

Clara hurried to the payphone mounted on the wood-paneled wall, feeding a quarter into the slot. Her fingers shook as she dialed the ten-digit number of her personal cell phone. It rang once, twice, three times. Then, someone picked up.

"Hello?" a cool, smooth voice answered instantly. It wasn't Julian. It sounded like a woman—calm, professional, and entirely unbothered.

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Who is this?" she demanded, gripping the receiver until her knuckles turned white. "Where is my phone?"

"Clara, darling, how predictable of you to call," a crisp, unfamiliar female voice replied on the other end. "I'm Victoria Vance, Julian’s corporate legal counsel. Your husband is currently indisposed dealing with police reports regarding a 'stolen vehicle' and a 'disturbed trespasser' on his property. But I found this little device sitting unattended in the bridal suite. And you know what else I found, Clara? I found a very interesting folder labeled Project Redacted. Tax fraud, offshore accounts, embezzlement... quite a busy hobby for a blushing bride."

Clara’s stomach plummeted into an abyss. Victoria had found the files. "Delete them," Clara hissed furiously. "If you touch those files, I swear to God I will walk straight to the FBI myself."

May you like

"Oh, sweetie, you won't be walking anywhere," Victoria laughed softly, a chilling sound that echoed through the phone line. "We checked your credit card logs just now. You're sitting at the Starlight Diner on 4th Street. And Julian’s private security detail is pulling into the parking lot right this second."
