Chapter 4 - Descending Into Darkness

The heavy click of the secret bookshelf sealing shut plunged Clara and little Lily into absolute, suffocating darkness. The air inside the hidden alcove smelled of damp earth and centuries-old stone, vastly different from the polished luxury of the ballroom upstairs. Clara clutched the sleeping toddler tighter against her chest, her bare shoulders shivering in the chill. She was safe from Julian for the moment, but she had no idea where the stone staircase led or how long it would take him to discover the mechanism.
Carefully extending one satin-clad foot, Clara felt for the edge of the first step. The stone was uneven and slick with moisture. Descending slowly, holding her heavy wedding gown up with one hand while balancing Lily with the other, she navigated the winding descent. Every creak of the ancient staircase sounded like thunder in the enclosed space.
After what felt like hours of walking down into the bowels of the estate, her foot finally hit level ground. Extending her free hand outward, her fingertips brushed against a cold, damp brick wall. She followed the wall sideways, inching forward in the inky blackness until her shoulder bumped into a rough wooden surface. Pushing against it, a small wooden panel swung open, letting in a pale sliver of fluorescent light and the steady hum of industrial machinery.
Clara blinked rapidly against the sudden brightness, stepping out of the hidden crawlspace. She found herself in the subterranean maintenance level of the wedding venue—a vast labyrinth of boiler rooms, electrical panels, and laundry chutes located far beneath the grand ballroom.
Through a nearby wire-mesh security window, Clara could see the loading dock outside. A white catering van was parked with its engine idling, the driver currently unloading empty crates of champagne glasses. This was her ticket out. If she could reach that van before Julian’s security team locked down the perimeter exits, she and Lily could escape this nightmare entirely.
However, moving through the concrete hallways in a bright white, off-the-shoulder wedding gown was practically shouting her location to anyone passing by. She needed a disguise, and she needed it immediately.

Scanning the rows of industrial laundry hampers lined up outside the staff breakroom, Clara spotted a pile of discarded gray coveralls left behind by the evening janitorial staff. She carefully lowered Lily onto a clean canvas folding chair, whispering instructions for the toddler to stay very quiet. Just as Clara reached out to grab a pair of oversized work pants from the hamper, a heavy set of security boot-steps echoed loudly down the concrete corridor, rapidly approaching their exact location.
