Chapter 14 - The Unfinished Thread

Clara instantly halted, her hand tightening protectively around Lily’s small shoulder. Marcus stepped forward, his hand dropping instinctively toward his jacket pocket as he assessed the newcomer.
Standing on the sidewalk was a middle-aged man in an impeccably tailored gray suit, wearing wire-rimmed glasses and holding a thick manila envelope stamped with a confidential government seal. He wasn't one of Julian’s thugs; his bearing was entirely different—calm, corporate, and lethal in a quiet way.
"Ms. Davis. My name is Arthur Vance," the man said smoothly, offering a polite, chillingly formal nod. He was Julian’s estranged uncle, a man rumored to have quietly separated himself from the family's corrupt business dealings a decade prior.
"If you're here to negotiate a settlement on behalf of Julian’save, save your breath," Clara said coldly, her voice dropping an octave as she glared at him. "Every single asset he owns is frozen by federal order, and he's spending the next twenty years behind bars."
Arthur raised his hands calmly, shaking his head. "I'm not here on Julian’s behalf, Ms. Davis. In fact, Julian is a fool who brought his own destruction upon himself. I'm here because my nephew was remarkably thorough in hiding corporate assets across international accounts—assets that don't belong to him, but rather to the charitable foundation my late sister established before she passed away."
Arthur extended the thick manila envelope toward Clara. She didn't take it immediately, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
"What is this?" Clara demanded.
"Proof that Julian didn't just embezzle from anonymous shell companies," Arthur replied softly, his voice carrying a genuine weight of sorrow. "He embezzled the entire college trust fund belonging to your daughter’s biological father—a man named David Reed, my former business partner who died under 'mysterious circumstances' five years ago, right before Julian stepped into your life."
Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. David Reed wasn't just a random name; he was the brilliant software engineer Clara had dated briefly during college, the man who had mysteriously vanished right before Lily was born, leaving Clara heartbroken and confused. Julian hadn't just randomly entered her life—he had orchestrated their entire romance from the shadows.
"Julian murdered him?" Clara whispered, horror washing over her as the darkest puzzle pieces clicked violently into place.

Arthur opened the manila envelope, pulling out a certified coroner's report dated five years ago, alongside a signed holographic will leaving everything to a baby girl named Lily. "Not directly," Arthur said quietly, locking eyes with Clara. "At least... not yet. But the paperwork inside this envelope proves that Julian engineered David's disappearance to steal his patents and inherit his estate. And if you open this file, you'll find something even more shocking: Julian knew Lily was David's daughter the entire time he proposed to you at the altar."
