Chapter 2 - Sanctuary in the Shadows

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom clicked shut, sealing Clara and little Lily in the cavernous, dimly lit foyer of the estate. The distant sound of murmuring guests faded into a suffocating silence. Clara’s breath came in ragged gasps as she clutched the three-year-old tightly against her chest, the full skirt of her white wedding gown sweeping the dusty antique rug. Lily’s breathing had slowed to exhausted little hiccups, her curly brown hair damp against her forehead.

"Mommy, are we going home?" Lily whispered, her small voice trembling as she buried her face deeper into the crook of Clara’s neck.

"Yes, sweet girl, we are going far away from here," Clara murmured back, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound brave. Her mind raced wildly. Julian’s groomsmen were stationed at the back exits, and security guards loyal to the groom’s billionaire father patrolled the perimeter. If she tried to walk out the front gates, they would intercept her within minutes. She needed a temporary hiding place, somewhere inside this sprawling venue where Julian would never think to look.

Clara pivoted on her heel, her diamond earrings catching the faint amber glow of a wall sconce. She remembered the floor plan from the rehearsal dinner. Down a narrow service corridor behind the coat check lay the old estate library—a rarely used room filled with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and heavy velvet drapes.

Moving as quietly as the rustling tulle of her gown allowed, Clara hurried down the dim hallway. The air here smelled of old paper, dust, and dried lavender. She slipped inside the library, quietly clicking the heavy brass latch into place behind her. The room was shrouded in deep shadows, illuminated only by the pale moonlight cutting through tall Gothic windows.

She knelt carefully on the Persian carpet, resting Lily gently on a plush velvet sofa. The toddler was fast asleep now, exhausted from the terror of the altar. Clara brushed a damp curl from the little girl's forehead, her heart breaking all over again. How had she missed the warning signs? Julian had been the picture of charm during their two-year courtship, patient, attentive, and seemingly devoted to both her and Lily. Yet, the moment the pressure of the wedding mounted, the mask had slipped entirely.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed against the thick oak library door. Clara froze, holding her breath, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle any sound.

"Clara? I know you're in this wing," Julian's voice drifted through the wood, dangerously calm and chillingly quiet. "Don't be ridiculous. Open the door right now, or I'll have security tear these hinges off."
