Chapter 3 - The Secret Compartment

The doorknob rattled violently, the metallic click echoing like a gunshot in the silent library. Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs as she stared at the heavy oak door. Julian’s footsteps paced back and forth in the narrow hallway, his muffled threats growing more frantic with every passing second.

"Clara, open this door immediately!" Julian’s voice rose, losing its polished veneer. "You are embarrassing me! My father’s business associates are still out in the ballroom. If you think you can just walk away and ruin my reputation without consequences, you are severely mistaken."

Clara backed away from the door, her white gown rustling against the Persian rug. She scooped sleeping Lily back into her arms, pressing the toddler tightly to her chest. The room offered no other exits; the Gothic windows were locked from the outside and sat thirty feet above a cobblestone courtyard. She was trapped.

Her panicked eyes swept the dark room, landing on the towering mahogany bookshelves that lined the western wall. In the center of the shelving unit, the bindings of several antique encyclopedias looked slightly misaligned. Remembering a casual remark made by the estate’s elderly caretaker during the venue tour months ago, Clara rushed toward the massive shelving unit.

The caretaker had mentioned that the founding patriarch of the estate had built a hidden panic room behind the library walls during the prohibition era, accessible only by pulling a specific, faux-leather book spine. Clara frantically scanned the shelves, her trembling fingers brushing past centuries-old leather-bound volumes.

"Found you," a low, cruel voice muttered just outside the door as a heavy shoulder slammed against the wood, splintering the frame around the latch.

With a desperate cry, Clara’s palm slammed against a thick, red volume titled The History of Architecture. The book depressed inward like a lever. With a low, mechanical grinding sound, a massive section of the mahogany bookshelf swung outward into the dark interior, revealing a narrow stone staircase descending into pitch blackness.

Without a second thought, Clara dived through the opening just as the library door crashed inward with a deafening splinter of wood. The heavy mahogany shelf began to slowly slide back into place automatically. Through the narrowing gap of the secret doorway, Clara watched in horror as Julian strode into the library, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his eyes wild and furious, searching the empty room with a predator’s gaze just before the wall locked shut with a definitive, chilling click.
