Chapter 4 - Echoes of the Past

The voice from the dark depths of the root cellar was undeniably hoarse, strained by years of silence, yet it carried an eerie, familiar cadence that sent a violent shiver straight down Elena's spine. It sounded like a ghost speaking through a throat lined with dust and rust. Elena gripped the wooden fence behind her even tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white against the weathered slats.
"No," Elena whispered, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as she stared horror-struck at the heavy metal doors. "No, that's... that's a trick. A tape recorder. Mom wouldn't... Dad wouldn't do that."
Clara let go of Elena's arm and slowly stepped toward the cellar, her dark green cardigan swaying with her movements. She reached down, her fingers brushing against the black trash bag, confirming its contents were still secure.
"Look inside the bag, Elena," Clara commanded quietly, not taking her eyes off the rusted iron handles. "Go ahead. Open it up and see what I pulled out of the attic crawl space right before you came outside to yell at me."
Hesitant, trembling with a paralyzing dread, Elena tore her gaze away from the cellar doors and looked down at the mundane black plastic bag resting on the gravel. She took a hesitant step forward, her dark pants brushing against the prickly stems of the neglected garden weeds. Kneeling cautiously in the dirt, ignoring the stain it would leave on her light blue t-shirt, she reached out with shaking fingers and pulled the drawstring loose.
Inside lay a collection of yellowed, thick medical journals, bound with cracked leather straps, alongside a heavy, old-fashioned analog tape recorder with a fresh set of batteries taped to the side. At the very top rested a framed photograph of their father standing proudly in front of the open root cellar doors, smiling broadly while holding a heavy padlock.
Elena lifted the top journal, her eyes scanning the neat, manicured handwriting of their late father on the open page. The entry date matched the exact week of David's supposed disappearance twenty years ago.
"Subject exhibiting severe aggression and anomalous physical strength," Elena read aloud, her voice trembling violently as the brutal truth sank in. "Contained in subterranean bunker for public safety... God forgive us."

Before Elena could flip to the next page, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the bottom of the cellar stairs, followed by the slow, grinding screech of the heavy deadbolt sliding completely open from the inside.
