Chapter 15 - The Final Dawn

The blinding flash of bioluminescent energy filled the underground tunnel, accompanied by a deafening screech of molten metal as the iron gate gave way under David's explosive force. The suppressed carbine barked once, the bullet grazing David's shoulder, but the momentum of his shockwave knocked both tactical operatives violently off their feet, sending them crashing into the shallow water.
"Go! Run!" David shouted, his voice strained to its absolute limit as he grabbed Clara and Elena, shoving them through the melted gap in the gate and out into the blinding afternoon sunlight.
The sisters tumbled out of the drainage pipe onto the grassy embankment just beyond the interstate sound barrier. Traffic roared past on the highway above, indifferent to the nightmare they had just escaped. Elena scrambled to her feet, coughing and gasping for fresh air, her light blue t-shirt ruined, her hands trembling violently. Clara pulled herself up right beside her, her dark green cardigan torn and stained, spinning back toward the dark opening of the pipe.
"David! Come on!" Clara screamed, reaching back into the shadow of the tunnel.
David stood just inside the mouth of the pipe, his silhouette framed against the darkness. He shook his head slowly, a peaceful, weary smile touching his cracked lips. The bioluminescent glow in his hands was fading, returning his skin to its pale, exhausted normality.
"I can't go with you, Clara," David said softly, his voice carrying clearly over the roar of the highway traffic. "As long as I'm alive, they will never stop hunting you. But if I stay... if the facility thinks I perished in the collapse... you and Elena can finally live."
"We're not leaving you!" Elena sobbed, stepping toward the pipe, but a deep, structural rumble from beneath the earth cut her off.
The upper section of the drainage tunnel groaned under the weight of the highway above, triggered by the kinetic blast. A cascade of loose dirt and concrete rubble crashed down inside the tunnel, sealing the entrance completely in a wall of grey dust and stone.
"David!" Clara cried out, pounding her fists against the newly fallen debris until her knuckles bled.

Silence answered her, save for the steady hum of cars speeding by on the interstate.
Two hours later, sitting on the curb of a quiet downtown street far from their childhood home, Clara and Elena held each other tightly. In Clara's pocket, safe and untouched, lay the flash drive she had managed to snatch from the bottom of the black trash bag before the chaos began—proof of the conspiracy, and a promise of justice. As the warm amber light of the setting sun broke through the clouds, bathing the quiet American town in a soft, golden glow, the sisters finally took their first truly free breath, knowing the nightmare was over, but the fight for the truth was only just beginning.
