Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The sharp crack of breaking glass echoed violently against the beige siding of the suburban house, sending a jagged spiderweb pattern across the shattered living room window. Clara stood frozen for a split second, her knuckles white around the heavy ceramic vase she had just hurled, breathing heavily through her nose. Her dark reddish-brown hair was slightly damp from sweat, framing a face locked in a mask of exhausted fury. She wore her rumpled dark green cardigan unbuttoned over a plain white top, the blue jeans stained with fresh dirt from her frantic dash across the lawn.
Elena stepped further into the ruined flowerbed next to the rumbling outdoor air conditioning unit, her light blue t-shirt slightly stretched from her tense posture. Her dark hair was pulled back into a practical ponytail, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound disbelief.
"Stop this crazy behavior!" Elena shouted, her voice cutting through the hum of the AC unit like a razor blade.
Clara whipped around, her eyes flashing with a desperate, defensive fire. She dropped the black trash bag she had been dragging, letting it slump heavily onto the gravel.
"You think this is crazy?" Clara snapped back, taking a sharp step toward her sister.
"Look at what you're doing, Clara! You're destroying the house!" Elena yelled, gesturing wildly at the broken window and the scattered debris littering the side yard.
"I'm trying to save us!" Clara fired back, her voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper that held far more terror than anger. "You don't know what's inside that bag."
Elena crossed her arms, her jaw tightening as she stared down the black plastic. "It's just old junk from the attic. Mom's stuff."
"It's not Mom's stuff," Clara whispered, stepping closer until she was nearly nose-to-nose with her sister. "And it never was."

Before Elena could demand an explanation, a heavy thud echoed from deep inside the house, right beneath the floorboards they were standing on.
